All competency standards in a Training Package include
information about the communication skills needed for satisfactory performance
of work roles and tasks.
Sometimes
the language, literacy and numeracy requirements are obvious - there
may be a separate unit such as 'Communicate
in the workplace' devoted to them, or an element within a unit may
focus on literacy/numeracy skills. More often, LLN requirements are embedded
throughout the unit, including in Range Statements or Critical Evidence.
A
good way to identify the LLN requirements is to review the unit
and ask the following questions:
|
-
What
do people have to listen to and understand?
-
What
do they have to say?
-
What
do they have to read?
-
What
do they have to write?
-
Do they
need to understand any diagrams, pictures or symbols?
-
What
maths calculations do they need to do?
What
are the literacy/numeracy requirements of the units you are teaching?
First,
click on the link below for an example of how language, literacy
and numeracy requirements may be identified in a unit of competency.
After
looking at the example, try Activity 3. |

What about the LLN requirements of the units you are delivering?
Choose several units of competency that you have to
deliver.
Using
highlighter pens (as indicated below), mark out the language, literacy
and numeracy requirements for each
unit according to the
following questions:
- What
do people have to listen to and understand?
- What
do they have to say?
- What
do they have to read?
- What
do they have to write?
- Do
they need to understand any diagrams, pictures or symbols?
- What
maths calculations do they need to do?
|
Having
identified the LLN requirements of your units, consider:
- Which
LLN skills do students need before they commence training?
- Which
LLN skills can students learn through the training program?
- To
what extent have you planned to develop these communication
and numeracy
skills
in your delivery strategy?
Once again,
the final two sections in this program will give you a range of
strategies to address these questions. |
