Who can help me support students' literacy/numeracy needs?

Until now we have focused on strategies that you can implement within your own teaching and assessment to support students' LLN needs, including evaluating the appropriateness of your learning resources and assessment materials.

You will go a long way towards addressing LLN issues by consciously focusing on the communication and numeracy requirements of your training package, and by eliminating unnecessary learning barriers in the materials you use.

However even when these steps are put in place, some students will still require specialised support from teachers with specific LLN expertise in order to achieve the outcomes of their course. This can occur through LLN teachers working collaboratively with you to provide integrated support, or by referring students for one-to-one assistance.

Where specialised support is required, you should contact one of the ALBE teams for advice. ALBE offers two different literacy and numeracy support strategies, both cost-free:

  • CAVSS - Course in Applied Vocational Study Skills
CAVSS is a method of team teaching which integrates literacy and numeracy support within vocational classes.
  • ATA - Additional Tutorial Assistance
The ATA program provides for one-on-one literacy, numeracy or learning strategies support for trainees and apprentices in the vocational pathways listed on the OPCET Funded Pathway List.

Click the links below for specific information about how the CAVSS and ATA programs work, and how to instigate support for your students.
