Campsite Catering

A 5-day practical workshop geared towards planning and preparing quality, nutritious food for customers in an outdoor environment. Topics covered will include: hygiene, nutrition, allergies, special dietary requirements, planning menus, selecting quality ingredients, quantities, tips for food preparation, knife skills, workflow planning, spices, preparation of vegetables, soups, eggs, meat and fish, dehydrated food, desserts.

A 2-day course covering basic first aid skills and knowledge to provide first response, life support and management of casualties in an urban environment until medical aid arrives.

Remote Area First Aid

A 5-day non-residential course for adventure guides, outdoor educators and instructors. It is designed to build on a basic first aid qualification, with advanced first aid skills for assessing and managing injuries and illness in semi-remote and remote outdoor environments. This course is the standard in Tasmania for guides and educators responsible for the safety of groups in the outdoors.

Pre-requisite (essential): Senior/Intermediate First Aid Certificate.
Duration: 5 days

Wilderness First Aid

A 7-day non-residential course for adventure guides and leaders of extended trips into remote wilderness areas. It will give participants the skills to respond to injuries and illness in the field with a greater practical component, focusing more on the leadership and co-ordination tasks of managing medical emergencies in remote locations where medical assistance may be delayed for days.

Pre-requisite (essential): Senior/Intermediate First Aid Certificate or Remote Area First Aid Certificate
Duration: 7 days

Expedition Medicine & Vertical Rescue

An 8-day residential course for senior adventure guides, outdoor instructors/educators, expedition leaders and doctors responsible for small and large groups on extended expeditions into remote and mountainous regions of the world. Includes a Wilderness First Aid Certificate plus more advanced medical techniques:

  • Defibrillation
  • Search & rescue
  • Communications
  • Suturing wounds
  • Pre-trip healthcare planning
  • Medications and administering injections
  • Eye examination and removal of foreign bodies

The course is run in conjunction with General Practice Training Tasmania (GPTT). Trainers are doctors from GPTT and ambulance officers. Course fees include food and basic accommodation for 6 days.

Pre-requisite (essential): Current Remote Area or Wilderness First Aid Certificate

Basic River Guide (Rafting)

A 4-day introduction, to the world of white water rafting and raft guiding. This course has been designed for those who would like to spend more time on the water either recreationally or as a raft guide. In moving water on the Mersey River, participants will learn and practice controlling a raft, a range of strokes and paddling manoeuvres, negotiating or avoiding river hazards, launching and landing a raft, planning and running rapids, communication techniques, capsize procedures and self-rescue skills.

Pre-requisites (recommended): kayaking or rafting experience

River Rescue

A 2-day practical workshop conducted on the river for raft guides and kayakers who wish to hone their river rescue skills. The course will cover in theory, practical demonstration and scenarios, a range of assisted and unassisted rescue and recovery methods, including rescuing swimmers, release from entrapments and establishing mechanical advantage systems to rescue paddlers and craft. A great opportunity to learn the latest techniques from experienced professionals.

Pre-requisites (essential): River kayaking and/or white water rafting experience

White Water Rafting Guide

A 7-day practical course for raft guides and white water paddlers. More advanced than the Basic River Guide course, this course combines the skills required to guide a raft down rivers up to and including grade 3. Includes rescue and recovery skills from the River Rescue course. Take advantage of this opportunity to hone your white water skills with experienced professionals.

Pre-requisites (essential): river kayaking and/or white water rafting experience

Sea Kayaking Expedition Skills

A 5-day course for sea kayakers wishing to develop their expedition skills. In easy to moderate conditions, participants will practice a range of strokes, rescues, towing techniques and surf landings. Other areas of focus will be navigation, weather interpretation and packing for multi-day expeditions. The course will include a 5 day sea kayak journey along the south east coast of Tasmania.

Pre-requisites (essential): minimum 10 days sea kayaking experience; bushwalking experience
Duration: 5 days
