What is the course all about?

The Certificate IV is suitable for employees with (first line) responsibility for Occupational Health and Safety.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • Intended for students who are employed as or seeking employment as OHS officers, coordinators, managers, supervisors, safety representatives and safety committee members


Do I need any skills?

  • Mature age students with appropriate written and oral presentation skills are eligible to participate.

How will I learn?

For classroom based learning, delivery is a combination of:

  • Workshops in the classroom for underpinning knowledge by TAFE staff and outside subject matter experts
  • Team/group work including group discussions and activities
  • Individual workplace projects
  • Practical exercises which comprise guided practical program of work with monitoring equipment
    Case studies
  • Role plays including games and simulations using workplace examples/procedures
  • Personal research with research activities related to learning and assessment tasks including online work

For online learning, delivery is a combination of:

  • Individual online work
  • Facilitated discussions and chats
  • Individual workplace projects
  • Personal research

For self paced learning, delivery is as for both classroom based and online learning.

All learning materials, including learning resources such as case studies and simulations, will be customised to reflect learner needs.

Support and resources will include learner access to:

  • Relevant workplace documents
  • Technical equipment
  • Library resources and learning centres
  • Mentoring
  • Disability support services
  • Literacy and numeracy support
  • Training and career plan development
  • Recognition services


How will I be assessed?

A range of assessment tools will be used. It is expected that most will require the application of knowledge and skills at the standard expected in the workplace.

As a general principle, assessment tools will include:

  • Workplace based activity presented in report format,
  • Supervisors/managers testimonial and
  • Knowledge report.

Other assessment tools used in some units include:

  • Portfolios
  • Classroom observation

Wherever possible, an integrated assessment that reflects the grouping of competencies as they would be demonstrated in the workplace, is the preferred means of assessment.

Assessments may be undertaken individually. One reassessment is allowed for each unit.

Recognition of Current Competency or Prior Learning is also available. A procedure is available which addresses Recognition.

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health and Safety procedures must be followed


What other study or career options are available?

Graduates may use the qualification to obtain employment.

Graduates may also pursue further study such as:

  • Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety at TAFE Tasmania
  • Advanced Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety at TAFE Tasmania
  • Degree programs at universities interstate

What Competencies will I undertake?

As stipulated in the Business Services Training Package, the qualification rules for BSB41604 Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety require ten (10) units to be completed in order to achieve this qualification:

  • 5 core units, plus
  • 5 elective units.

Core Units from the occupational health and safety domain (All five required)

  • *BSBOHS401A Contribute to the implementation of a systematic approach to managing OHS
  • *BSBOHS402A Contribute to the implementation of the OHS consultation process
  • *BSBOHS403A Identify hazards and assess OHS risks
  • *BSBOHS404A Contribute to the implementation of strategies to control OHS risks
  • *BSBCMN421A Assist with compliance with OHS and other relevant laws

PLUS
Achieve 5 elective units.

Elective units from the occupational health and safety domain (minimum of one required)

  • *BSBOHS405A Contribute to the implementation of emergency procedures
  • *BSBOHS406A Use equipment to conduct workplace monitoring

Elective units from the Common Business units, at least two must be selected and the remainder may be selected from the Business Services training package or any other endorsed training package. Note that the common unit BSBCMN411A Monitor a safe workplace cannot be undertaken for this qualification. The other common business units are:

  • BSBCMN403A Establish business networks
  • BSBCMN404A Develop teams and individuals
  • *BSBCMN405A Analyse and present research information
  • BSBCMN406A Maintain business technology
  • BSBCMN407A Coordinate business resources

  • BSBCMN409A Promote products and services
  • BSBCMN410A Coordinate implementation of customer service strategies
  • BSBCMN412A Promote innovation and change
  • BSBCMN413A Implement and monitor environmental policies
  • BSBCMN414A Undertake marketing activities
  • BSBCMN415A Manage first aid policy
  • BSBCMN416A Identify risk and apply risk management processes
  • BSBCMN417A Coordinate customer service activities
  • BSBCMN418A Address customer needs
  • BSBCMN419A Manage projects
  • *BSBCMN420A Write complex documents
  • BSBFLM412A Promote team effectiveness

The program offered at TAFE Tasmania includes additional competencies which are intended to give participants essential underpinning knowledge and skills.

  • BSBHR509A Manage rehabilitation/return-to-work programs

NB: Units marked * are the units recommended/selected for delivery in this qualification.

2008 Fees

$3,000 per person. Fee covers all training sessions, assessments, hand-out materials and use of technical equipment.

Assessment Validation Process

Instructors/assessors attend regularly scheduled meetings to:

  • discuss assessment strategies
  • review assessment materials to ensure currency, validity, reliability, fairness and flexibility
  • share information and assessment tools
  • ensure that assessment strategies address the needs of our learners

Assessment validation processes will also include:

  • Establishing an assessment panel
  • Moderation meetings
  • Client satisfaction surveys
  • Peer reviews

A continuous improvement process is applied to the assessment.

Consultation

The training and assessment strategies for this qualification are developed in consultation with a range of trainers and assessors from TAFE Tasmania as well as an Industry Reference Group.
