What is the course all about?

The Diploma provides additional knowledge and skills for employees in Occupational Health and Safety policy making, advisory or management roles.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • Intended for students who are employed as or seeking employment as OHS managers.


Do I need any skills?

  • Mature age students with appropriate written and oral presentation skills are eligible to participate.


How long will it take?

Hobart Clarence Campus (Dates and Registration Form)

16 days full-time (part time equiv.), on-line and/or self-paced (held over 10 months)

Launceston City Campus 16 days full-time (held over 10 months)
Devonport Campus 16 days full-time (held over 10 months)
Burnie Campus 16 days full-time (held over 10 months)

How will I learn?

For classroom based learning, delivery is a combination of:

  • Workshops in the classroom for underpinning knowledge by TAFE staff and outside subject matter experts
  • Team/group work including group discussions and activities
  • Individual workplace projects
  • Case studies
  • Role plays including games and simulations using workplace examples/procedures
  • Personal research with research activities related to learning and assessment tasks including online work

For online learning, delivery is a combination of:

  • Individual online work
  • Facilitated discussions and chats
  • Individual workplace projects
  • Personal research

For self paced learning, delivery is as for both classroom based and online learning.

All learning materials, including learning resources such as case studies and simulations, will be customised to reflect learner needs.

Support and resources will include learner access to:

  • Relevant workplace documents
  • Technical equipment
  • Library resources and learning centres
  • Mentoring
  • Disability support services
  • Literacy and numeracy support
  • Training and career plan development
  • Recognition services


How will I be assessed?

A range of assessment tools will be used. It is expected that most will require the application of knowledge and skills at the standard expected in the workplace.

As a general principle, assessment tools include:

  • Workplace based activity presented in report format
  • Portfolios
  • Classroom observation

Wherever possible, an integrated assessment that reflects the grouping of competencies as they would be demonstrated in the workplace, is the preferred means of assessment.

Assessments may be undertaken individually. One reassessment is allowed for each unit.

Recognition of Current Competency or Prior Learning is also available. A procedure is available which addresses Recognition.

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health and Safety procedures must be followed


What other study or career options are available?

Graduates may use the qualification to obtain employment.

Graduates may also pursue further study such as:

  • Advanced Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety at TAFE Tasmania
  • Degree programs at universities interstate


What Competencies will I undertake?

As stipulated in the Business Services Training Package, the qualification rules for BSB51604 Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety require eight (8) units to be completed in order to achieve this qualification:

  • 5 core units, plus
  • 3 elective units.

Core Units from the occupational health and safety domain (A minimum of five required)

  • BSBOHS501A Participate in the coordination and maintenance of a systematic approach to managing OHS
  • BSBOHS502A Participate in the management of the OHS information and data systems
  • BSBOHS503A Assist in the design and development of OHS participative arrangements
  • BSBOHS504A Apply principles of OHS risk management
  • BSBOHS505A Manage hazards in the work environment
  • BSBOHS508A Participate in the investigation of incidents

PLUS
The remaining three units may be selected from the Business Services Training Package or any other endorsed training package of which a minimum of two units must be from a Diploma qualification and one unit may be included from a Certificate IV or Advanced Diploma qualification.

These three units may include the two OHS listed below and the unit not chosen from the OHS units listed above. The other OHS units are:

  • BSBOHS506A Monitor and facilitate the management of hazards associated with plant
  • BSBOHS507A Facilitate the application of principles of occupational health to control OHS risk

The program offered at TAFE Tasmania includes additional competencies which are intended to give participants underpinning knowledge and skills.

  • BSBHR509A Manage rehabilitation/return-to-work programs.

2008 Fees

$3,200 per person. Fee covers all training sessions, assessments, hand-out materials and use of technical equipment.

Assessment Validation Process

Instructors/assessors attend regularly scheduled meetings to:

  • discuss assessment strategies
  • review assessment materials to ensure currency, validity, reliability, fairness and flexibility
  • share information and assessment tools
  • ensure that assessment strategies address the needs of our learners

Assessment validation processes will also include:

  • Establishing an assessment panel
  • Moderation meetings
  • Client satisfaction surveys
  • Peer reviews

A continuous improvement process is applied to the assessment.

Consultation

The training and assessment strategies for this qualification are developed in consultation with a range of trainers and assessors from TAFE Tasmania as well as an Industry Reference Group.
