What is the course all about?

The Advanced Diploma provides additional advanced knowledge and skills for employees in Occupational Health and Safety policy making, advisory or management roles.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • Intended for students who are employed as or seeking employment as OHS managers.


Do I need any skills?

  • Mature age students with appropriate written and oral presentation skills are eligible to participate.

How will I learn?

For online learning, delivery is a combination of:

  • Individual online work
  • Facilitated discussions and chats
  • Individual workplace projects
  • Personal research
  • Face-to-face tutorials

All learning materials, including learning resources such as case studies and simulations, will be customised to reflect learner needs.

Support and resources will include learner access to:

  • Relevant workplace documents
  • Technical equipment
  • Library resources and learning centres
  • Mentoring
  • Disability support services
  • Literacy and numeracy support
  • Training and career plan development
  • Recognition services


How will I be assessed?

A range of assessment tools will be used. It is expected that most will require the application of knowledge and skills at the standard expected in the workplace.

As a general principle, assessment tools include at least two of the following:

  • Workplace based activity presented in report format
  • Manager’s testimonial
  • Portfolios

Wherever possible, an integrated assessment that reflects the grouping of competencies as they would be demonstrated in the workplace, is the preferred means of assessment.

Assessments may be undertaken individually. One reassessment is allowed for each unit.

Recognition of Current Competency or Prior Learning is also available. A procedure is available which addresses Recognition.

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health and Safety procedures must be followed.


What other study or career options are available?

Graduates may use the qualification to obtain employment.

Graduates may also pursue further study such as:

  • Degree programs at universities interstate


What Competencies will I undertake?

As stipulated in the Business Services Training Package, the qualification rules for BSB61004 Advanced Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety require eight (8) units to be completed in order to achieve this qualification:

  • 5 core units, plus
  • 3 elective units.

Core Units from the occupational health and safety domain (A minimum of five required)

  • BSBOHS601A Develop a systematic approach to managing OHS
  • BSBOHS602A Develop OHS information and data analysis and reporting and recording processes
  • BSBOHS603A Analyse and evaluate OHS risk
  • BSBOHS604A Apply ergonomic principles to control OHS risk
  • BSBOHS605A Apply occupational hygiene principles to control OHS risk
  • BSBOHS606A Develop and implement crisis management processes
  • BSBOHS607A Advise on application of safe design principles to control OHS risk
  • BSBOHS608A Conduct an OHS audit
  • BSBOHS609A Evaluate an organisation’s OHS performance

PLUS
The remaining three units may be selected from the Business Services Training Package or any other endorsed training package of which a minimum of two units must be from an Advanced Diploma qualification and one unit may be included from a Diploma qualification.

These three units may be the units not chosen from the OHS units listed above.

Assessment Validation Process

Instructors/assessors attend regularly scheduled meetings to:

  • discuss assessment strategies
  • review assessment materials to ensure currency, validity, reliability, fairness and flexibility
  • share information and assessment tools
  • ensure that assessment strategies address the needs of our learners

Assessment validation processes will also include:

  • Establishing an assessment panel
  • Moderation meetings
  • Client satisfaction surveys
  • Peer reviews

A continuous improvement process is applied to the assessment.

The training and assessment strategies for this qualification are developed in consultation with a range of trainers and assessors from TAFE Tasmania as well as an Industry Reference Group.
