Crowd Control
This short course trains applicants in the competencies required for registration as a crowd controller in accordance with the Security and Investigation Agents Act 2002.

This course covers the following:

  • PRSSO202 Maintain workplace safety
  • PRSSO204 Work as part of a team
  • PRSSO207 Respond to security risk situation
  • PRSSO210 Control access to and exit from premises
  • PRSSO211 Monitor and control individual and crowd behaviour
  • PRSSO206 Provide first aid

Cost:
$500 per person (inc. textbooks)
Course fees must be paid at the time of enrolment. There are no concessions on these courses although payment plans are available on a case-by-case basis.

It should be noted that course fees do not include the cost of the unit “Provide First Aid” this is normally undertaken by applicants at their own cost with the training provider of their own choice.

Security Industry Firearms Handling
Security Guards or Security agents who wish to carry handguns as part of their duties must apply to Tasmania Police for a category H6 firearms licence.

Applicants must provide Tasmania Police with good reason for the granting of such a licence. If the police approve the application they will provide written authority to enrol on a security industry firearms handling course, a copy of which must be forwarded to TAFE Tasmania with an enrolment form.

Duration:
Courses are held at approximately twelve-week intervals, but depend on numbers.

Regular programs are offered in Hobart and Launceston. However, this program can be conducted at any location Statewide given viable numbers.

Cost:
$750 per person
Course costs do not include the cost of ammunition. Course fees must be paid in full before the commencement of the course, and ammunition fees on the first day of the course

Entry Requirements:
Applicant must not have been convicted of a disqualifying offence, (e.g dishonesty, violence or drug related).

Accreditation:
Statement of Attainment.
This course comprises all units required for the granting of a security industry pistol licence for revolvers or automatic pistols.

Conditional Licence Course (OHS Industry Units)
It should be noted that it is only possible to obtain a conditional licence from Consumer Affairs if an applicant has successfully completed the following two units of competency and has secured a job in the security industry:

Certificate II applicant
PRSSO202 Maintain Workplace Safety
PRSSO206 Provide First Aid

Consumer Affairs requires conditional licence holders to complete the required additional units of competency within twelve months of obtaining the conditional licence.

Delivery Mode
TAFE Tasmania can deliver most of the workplace safety units by correspondence and applicants can obtain the first aid qualification from a first aid training provider in their own area.

Cost:
$100 per person
Course fees do not include “Provide First Aid” or “Provide Advanced First Aid”. These units are to be undertaken by applicants at their own cost, with a training provider of their choice.

Certificate II Security Operations
This course provides the qualification required by law to enable employment as a security guard or security agent and is essential to gaining a Security Guard License.

NB:  The first part of the Certificate II in Security Operations includes the Crowd Control course.

 

Compulsory Units

  • PRSSO201 Communicate effectively in the security industry
  • PRSSO202 Maintain workplace safety
  • PRSSO203 Work effectively in the security industry
  • PRSSO204 Work as part of a team
  • PRSSO205 Provide security services to customers
  • PRSSO206 Provide first aid
  • PRSSO207 Respond to security risk situation

Elective Units

  • PRSSO209 Protect persons
  • PRSSO210 Control access to and exit from premises
  • PRSSO211 Monitor and control individual and crowd behaviour
  • PRSSO215 Operate basic security equipment
  • PRSSO216 Patrol premises

Tasmanian Firearms Licence

This training is required by all firearm license applicants in accordance with the Firearms Act 1996, Security Industry applicants, Recreational shooters, Target Shooters and Primary Producers.

Students can enrol in this program only if:

  • they have a letter from Tasmania Police (Firearms Services) authorising them to enrol on a Firearm Safety Course, or
  • a current Tasmanian Firearms Licence, or
  • a current Tasmanian Minors Permit

To obtain the Tasmania Police authorisation letter, applicants must first lodge an application for a firearms licence with Service Tasmania who will then forward it to Tasmania Police (Firearms Services).

Cost: Varies depending on the Licence being applied for.
