Want to Improve Your Reading, Writing and Maths Skills for everyday life and future work and study?
Join a small group to develop skills for work and/or prepare for future study. Based on your skill level, learning needs and goals as determined in a pre training interview.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
Adults who want to improve their literacy and numeracy for personal, work or further study reasons. May include:
- Jobseekers
- Workers who want to improve their skills or change jobs
- Learners who want to improve their literacy/numeracy skills for vocational reasons
Do I need any skills?
There are no pre-requisites for the course. Training is based on your learning needs and goals and current skills level.
How long will it take?
Stage 1 & 2
Format may vary but face to face courses run for approximately 12 hours per week for 30 weeks.
Stage 3
Format may vary but face to face courses run for approximately 12 hours per week for 22 weeks.

Face to face classes in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport , Burnie
Distance Delivery
How will I learn?
The program is delivered through:
- Flexible mix of literacy, numeracy and computing units
- Theme based learning to meet individual and/or group skills, learning needs and goals.
- Face to face: Standard classroom and equipment including access to computers.
- Distance using paper based materials and teacher phone support.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will comprise a mix of ongoing assessment and more formal structured assessment tasks/activities/projects.
It can include:
- teacher observation
- discussion
- completion of practical tasks based on the student/s’ need.
Wherever possible multiple outcomes will be assessed at one time.

Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process
A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide ALBE team meet on a regional or state-wide basis to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.
