- People who would like to gain skills by completing some units and not the entire qualifications
- People who have completed some units of the Course in Police Service Preparation and now wanting the entire course
Do I need any skills?
Students who enrol in the entire course would benefit from completing Year 11 studies or equivalent.
Police Service Preparation students are expected to:
- read and record information accruately
- write in a legible manner (hand written)
- have a knowledge of spelling, grammar and punctuation
- understand and follow Occupational Health & Safety procedures
- have effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills (eg able to ask questions, participate in group discussions, give oral presentations, recognise and interpret non-verbal cues)
- have the ability to relate to people from a range of backgrounds
- problem solving skills including negotiation skills
- people currently working in the industry are physically fit
TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.
How long will it take?
Depending on your learning and assessment needs, it is expected you could complete the Course in Police Service Preparation by attending various training options:
- Hobart the course is offered as a 10 week full-time course, part-time day course, part-time evening course or flexible course.
- Launceston the course is offered as a full time day 10 weeks, part time evening approx. 20 weeks at 2 evenings per week or flexible course.
Part-time Evening Course -
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings - 6pm to 9pm.
- Burnie or Devonport the course is offered as a part-time evening course.
Burnie commences on Thursday, 7 August - 23 October 2008

How will I learn?
Full or part-time students
Flexible options are available for those students wishing to study at home.
Learning options may include:
- Classroom learning - theory, practical tasks
- Guest speakers - members from the Police Service attend and discuss numerous topics (eg what makes a good Police Officer)
- Group discussions
- Role Plays - eg practice interview with Police Service staff, acting as a witness
- Visits to Courts, Police Academy and relevant Police departments
- Visit to Fitness Venues - swimming pool and gym (eg Police & Citizens Youth Club)
- Written learning materials - booklets that contain information to help with your learning
- computer based learning - you will be using a computer to assist with your learning which may include on-line learning
- DVDs and Videos - resources that give you extra support and information
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. You will have the option to be assessed by:
- Recognition - you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don't need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
- Short written assessment - question and answer style test.
- Projects - group or individual, may be practical or research based.
- Assignments - research topic and provide a written response.
- Practical - you will be observed doing tasks.
- If required, other assessment methods may be used for students.
When I complete this training, what’s next?
Students are provided with the option of accessing career pathway planning. This pathway will assist students in understanding their career and training options, eg if during the course, a student finds the Police Service isn't for them, other training options may be discussed.
Further study or career options may include:
- implementing your career pathway (as outlined above)
- students who complete selected units only, may enrol in the entire Course in Police Service Preparation
- Apply to the Police Recruiting Office for a career in the Police Service

Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process
A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania's state-wide Pathways team and/or representatives from the Police Service Recruiting Branch, meet at least annually to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.
Consultation
The Police Service Recruiting Branch was consulted when this training and assessment strategy was initially developed. Police Service personnel are regularly consulted on an annual basis in reviewing this Strategy and the course delivery.
