What is the course all about?

This Certificate is designed to provide skills to perform manual and computerised bookkeeping and communication skills relevant to working in an office.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • Trainees (both new and existing employees) in the accounting and book-keeping industry
  • Those who require book-keeping skills to commence work in the industry
  • Those currently working in the accounting and finance industry who require a mix of recognition for their existing skills together with training and assessment in skill and knowledge gaps
  • Those who require the qualification as part of progression to be a registered book-keeper or be a member of one of the professional book-keeping associations
  • Those starting out on a journey to gain higher level accounting qualifications in the TAFE system or a Degree at University level using the ‘TAFE Tasmania/ University of Tasmania Articulation Agreement’
  • Those people who do not want to gain the complete qualification but complete individual units as required for professional development or career advancement


Do I need any skills?

You will need an aptitude for finance and an interest in computer applications as demonstrated by an interest or work in the clerical/ book-keeping/ accounting industry or have completed business/ accounting subjects at secondary school level.

The training assumes a good level of English language in terms of reading/ writing /speaking and listening. International students should have at least a level of IELTS to 5.5 or a Certificate III in Spoken and Written English. Migrant students should have completed a relevant English language program to at least Certificate III in Written and Spoken English standard.

The training provides learning in computer applications and accounting procedures from the base level and assumes no previous knowledge.

How long will it take?

Hobart City Campus (Enrolment & Information Dates)

  • Full time, day and evening
  • Part time, day and evening
  • On-the-job
  • Workplace based

Full-time 6 months (part-time equiv.)

Full-time generally equates to about 18-20 hours contact hours per week.

Launceston City, Devonport & Burnie Campus (Information Sessions)

  • Face-to-Face (Classroom based)
  • Distance Education
  • On-line
  • Self Paced Study

NB: some subjects are available flexibly (distance education) and on the Queenstown and Smithton Campuses

To complete the qualification will take six months as a full-time student and longer than that depending on the part-time load. Full time generally equates to about 18-20 contact hours per week.

The qualifications are provided on campus and off campus by the Accounting and Finance (North/North West) delivery team.

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options will include:

  • Day or evening classes at the various campuses
  • Studying off campus with a mixture of distance and on-line study
  • Learning your skills in the workplace and receiving recognition by being assessed for those skills

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:

  • Preparing financial records and reports for simulated business situations
  • Being observed performing practical tasks
  • Gathering evidence of your competency for recognition of your skills
  • On-line quizzes and tasks
  • Completing short answer questions
  • Completing supervised assessments
  • Performing tasks demonstrating the use of accounting and other business software

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Gaining work in the office or clerical field with an understanding of introductory accounting/ book-keeping both using a computerised accounting system and manually
  • Entering financial data into the accounting system under the supervision of an accountant
  • Preparing the payroll for employees
  • Continuing study to higher Certificate and Diploma qualifications or Degree level at University to obtain membership of an accounting professional association


What Competencies will I undertake?

To attain the Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) 13 units must be achieved:

  • 4 core units, plus
  • 5 sectorial core units, plus
  • 4 elective units.

Core units – complete all 4 units of competency

  • FNSICIND301B Work in the financial services industry
  • FNSICGEN301B Communicate in the workplace
  • FNSICGEN302B Use technology in the workplace
  • FNSICGEN304B Apply health and safety practices in the workplace

PLUS
Sectoral core units – complete 5 units of competency

  • FNSICACC304B Prepare and bank receipts
  • FNSICACC306B Process journal entries
  • BSBADM408A Prepare financial reports
  • FNSICGEN305B Maintain daily financial/business records
  • BSBCMN308A Maintain financial records

PLUS
Elective units (suggested) - complete 4 units of competency

  • BSBADM308A Process payroll
  • FNSICCUS301B Respond to customer enquiries
  • BSBCMN306A Produce business documents
  • FNSACCT407B Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
  • FNSIND401B Apply principles of professional practice to work in the financial services industry
  • FNSICORG302B Prepare reports for management
  • FNSICGEN303B Work with others
  • FDFCORBM2A Use basic mathematical concepts

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
