Certificate IV (FNS40207)
What is the course all about?
Bookkeepers record financial transactions and may produce financial reports for businesses. They may work with an accountant to support them in having information entered correctly so that adjustments can be made at the end of the financial period and reports and taxation returns can be prepared.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- People who aspire to work as a contract bookkeeper or an employee performing the role of a bookkeeper in an organisation who performs duties such as:
- Establishing and Maintaining accounting systems;
- Assisting with Business Activity Statements and other office taxes;
- Payroll;
- Developing management systems for organisations
- Those who have completed the Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) and are on a journey to gain higher level bookkeeping qualifications in the TAFE system.
- Those currently working in the bookkeeping industry who require a mix of recognition for their existing skills together with training and assessment in skill and knowledge gaps.
- Those who require the qualification to be a registered book-keeper or be a member of one of the professional book-keeping associations.
- Those people who do not want to gain the complete qualification but complete individual units as required for professional development or career advancement.
Do I need any skills?
You will need to complete FNS30304 Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) prior to beginning your study of FNS40207 Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping). Certain units that you complete in the Certificate III program will be credit transferred into the Certificate IV.
How long will it take?
Once you have completed FNS30304 Certificate III in Financial Services qualification, FNS40207 Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) should take an additional semester (6 months) of full time study or the part-time equivalent to complete. Full time generally equates to about 18-20 contact hours per week.

How will I learn?
Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options will include:
- Study face to face with a teacher in a classroom situation; or
- Study flexibly using either print based or online resources with the help of a tutor; or
- Learning your skills in the workplace and receiving recognition by being assessed for those skills; or
- You may have partly completed a business qualification at University or at another TAFE college or Vocational Education and Training (VET) provider and be granted recognition for your knowledge.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:
- Assignments, Practice Tests, Case Studies and Tests consistent with bookkeeping industry requirements; or
- Recognition of your existing skills and knowledge through a process called Recognition of Current Competence.

When I complete this training, what's next?
Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:
- Admission into the professional body for bookkeepers such as the Association of Accounting Technician;
- Establishment of a practice as a contract bookkeeper; or
- Employment as a bookkeeper in an organisation;
- Completion of an Accounting qualification such as the Diploma of Accounting

- 2 elective units.

- FNSBKPG401A Develop and implement policies and practices relevant to bookkeeping activities
- FNSBKPG402A Establish and maintain a cash accounting system
- FNSBKPG403A Establish and maintain an accrual accounting system
- FNSBKPG404A Carry out Business Activity and Instalment Activity Statement tasks
- FNSACCT406B Maintain asset and inventory records
- FNSACCT405B Prepare Financial Statements
- FNSBKPG405B Establish and maintain a payroll system
PLUS
2 elective units
- BSBADM408A Prepare financial reports
- BSBADM404A Develop and use complex spreadsheets
Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
