What is the course all about?

This Certificate is designed to provide skills for those carrying out functions that involve financial reporting, managerial reporting and interpreting and ensuing compliance in statutory and regulatory requirements.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • Those who have completed the Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) and are on a journey to gain higher level accounting qualifications in the TAFE system or a Degree at University level using the ‘TAFE Tasmania/ University of Tasmania Articulation Agreement’
  • Those currently working in the accounting and finance industry who require a mix of recognition for their existing skills together with training and assessment in skill and knowledge gaps
  • Those who require the qualification as part of progression to be a registered book-keeper or be a member of one of the professional book-keeping associations
  • Those wishing to practice as an Accountant and be member of an accounting professional association once they hold a higher level accounting qualification
  • Those people who do not want to gain the complete qualification but complete individual units as required for professional development or career advancement


Do I need any skills?

You will need to demonstrate that you have an excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office Applications and both manual and computerised book-keeping skills and knowledge both of which can be obtained in the Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical).

The financial competencies of Certificate IV have in general a requirement of underpinning knowledge and skills that include:

  • computerised and manual accrual accounting knowledge
  • numeracy skills
  • information technology skills including the ability to use spreadsheets and prepare documents
  • interpersonal skills and communications

You will need an aptitude for finance and an interest in computer applications as demonstrated by an interest or work in the clerical/ book-keeping/ accounting industry or previous accounting study.

How long will it take?

Hobart City Campus (Enrolment & Information Dates)

  • Full time, day and evening
  • Part time, day and evening
  • On-the-job
  • Workplace based

Full-time 6 months (part-time equiv.)

Full-time generally equates to about 18-20 hours contact hours per week.

Launceston City, Devonport & Burnie Campus (Information Sessions)

  • Face-to-Face (Classroom based)
  • Distance Education
  • On-line
  • Self Paced Study

NB: some subjects are available flexibly (distance education) and on the Queenstown and Smithton Campuses

To complete the qualification will take 6 months as a full time student and longer than that depending on the part time load.
Full time generally equates to about 20 hours per week.

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options will include:

  • Day or evening classes
  • Studying off campus with a mixture of distance and on-line study
  • Learning your skills in the workplace and receiving recognition by being assessed for those skills
  • You may have partly completed a business qualification at University or at another TAFE college or Vocational Education and Training (VET) provider and be granted recognition for your knowledge.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:

  • Preparing financial records and reports for simulated business situations
  • Engaging in simulated business case studies
  • Preparing reports for management
  • Being observed performing practical tasks
  • On-line quizzes and tasks
  • Projects
  • Short answers
  • Examinations where required by the Tax Agents Board for Taxation competencies

All units in this qualification area assessed considering the employablity skills of:

  • communication
  • teamwork
  • problem solving
  • initiative and enterprise
  • planning and organising
  • self-management
  • learning
  • technology

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Work as a Clerical Officer, Office Manager, Payroll Officer, Book-keeper or Assistant Accountant
  • Be a registered book-keeper on joining a book-keeping professional organisation
  • As a book-keeper, submit Business Activity Statement (BAS) returns for small businesses
  • Continue study to a Diploma of Accounting progressing to Advanced Diploma in Accounting or Degree level at University to obtain membership of an accounting professional association.


What Competencies will I undertake?

To attain the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) 13 units must be achieved:

  • 4 core units, plus
  • 6 sectorial core units, plus
  • 3 elective units.

Core units – complete all 4 units of competency

  • FNSICGEN301B Communicate in the workplace
  • FNSICGEN302B Use technology in the workplace
  • FNSICGEN304B Apply health and safety practices in the workplace
  • FNSICIND401B Apply principles of professional practice to work in the financial services industry

PLUS
Sectoral core units – complete 6 of the following units of competency

  • FNSACCT401B Process business tax requirements
  • FNSACCT402B Produce job costing information
  • FNSACCT403B Prepare operational budgets
  • FNSACCT404B Make decisions within a legal context
  • FNSACCT405B Prepare financial statements
  • FNSACCT406B Maintain asset and inventory records

PLUS
Elective units – complete 3 units of competency

South

  • BSBADM408A Prepare financial reports
  • FNSICORG302B Prepare reports for management
  • FNSACCT503B Manage budgets and forecasts

North / North West

  • BSBADM404A Develop and use complext spreadsheets
  • FNSACCT507B Provide management accounting information
  • FNSACCT503B Manage budgets and forecasts

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
