What is the course all about?

The Diploma is designed to provide skills for a person typically employed as an office manager, senior clerical officer or assistant accountant.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • Those who have completed the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) and are on a journey to gain higher level accounting qualifications in the TAFE system or a Degree at University level using the ‘TAFE Tasmania/ University of Tasmania Articulation Agreement’
  • Those who are wishing to gain membership of the Tax Agents Board and work as a Tax Agent
  • Those who work as a book-keeper and want further skills in taxation and higher level accounting and reporting skills and knowledge
  • Those wishing to be fully qualified as an Accountant and a member of an accounting professional organisation
  • Those people who do not want to gain the complete qualification but complete individual units as required for professional development or career advancement


Do I need any skills?

You will need to demonstrate that you have taxation, costing, budgeting, legal knowledge and well developed book-keeping skills and knowledge all of which can be obtained in the Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) and Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting).

You will need an aptitude for finance and an interest in computer applications as demonstrated by an interest or work in the clerical/ book-keeping/ accounting industry or previous accounting study.

How long will it take?

Hobart City Campus (Enrolment & Information Dates)

  • Full time, day and evening
  • Part time, day and evening
  • On-the-job
  • Workplace based

Full-time 6 months (part-time equiv.)

Full-time generally equates to about 18-20 hours contact hours per week.

Launceston City, Devonport & Burnie Campus (Information Sessions)

  • Face-to-Face (Classroom based)
  • Distance Education
  • On-line
  • Self Paced Study

NB: some subjects are available flexibly (distance education).

To complete the qualification will take 6 months as a full time student and longer than that depending on the part time load.
Full time generally equiates to about 20 hours per week.

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options will include:

  • Day or evening classes
  • Studying off campus (some units) with a mixture of distance and on-line study
  • Learning your skills in the workplace and receiving recognition by being assessed for those skills
  • You may have partly completed a business qualification at University or at another TAFE college or Vocational Education and Training (VET) provider and be granted recognition for your knowledge.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:

  • Projects
  • Preparing financial records and reports for simulated business situations
  • Preparing reports for management
  • Being observed performing practical tasks
  • On-line quizzes and tasks
  • Short answer
  • Examinations where required by the Tax Agents Board for Taxation competencies

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Working as a Clerical Officer, Office Manager, Payroll Officer, Book-keeper or Assistant Accountant
  • Being a registered book-keeper on joining a book-keeping professional organisation
  • As a book-keeper, submit Business Activity Statement (BAS) returns for small businesses
  • Continuing study in the Advanced Diploma in Accounting or Degree level at University to obtain membership of an accounting professional association. The Diploma of Accounting entitles people 6 units of credit into the Bachelor of Business under the TAFE Tasmania/ University of Tasmania Articulation Agreement


What Competencies will I undertake?

To attain the Diploma of Accounting 12 units must be achieved, plus the pre-requisites:

  • 5 pre-requisite units
  • 4 core units, plus
  • 5 sectorial core units, plus
  • 3 elective units.

  • FNSICACC304B Prepare and bank receipts
  • FNSICACC306B Process journal entries
  • FNSACCT407B Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
  • BSBADM408A Prepare financial reports
  • BSBCMN308A Maintain financial records

Core units – complete all 4 units of competency

  • FNSICGEN301B Communicate in the workplace
  • FNSICGEN302B Use technology in the workplace
  • FNSICGEN304B Apply health and safety practices in the workplace
  • FNSICIND401B Apply principles of professional practice to work in the financial services industry

PLUS
Sectoral core units – complete all 5 units of competency

  • FNSACCT502A Prepare income tax returns
  • FNSACCT503A Manage budgets and forecasts
  • FNSACCT504A Prepare financial reports for a reporting entity
  • FNSACCT506A Implement and maintain internal control procedures
  • FNSACCT507A Provide management accounting information

PLUS
Suggested Elective units – complete 3 of the following units of competency

South

  • FNSACCT607B Evaluate business performance
  • FNSACCT505B Establish and maintain accounting information systems
  • BSBSBM404A Undertake business planning, OR
  • BSBMKG403A Analyse market data

North / North West

  • Provide financial and business performance informatin
  • Evaluate business performance
  • Undertake business planning

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
