Advanced Diploma (FNS60204)
What is the course all about?
This qualification is designed to provide the education and training to be a tax agent, clerical officer, assistant accountant or accountant with specialist skills.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- Those who have completed the Diploma of Accounting and are on a journey to gain higher level accounting qualifications in the TAFE system or a Degree at University level using the ‘TAFE Tasmania/ University of Tasmania Articulation Agreement’
- Those who are wishing to gain membership of the Tax Agents Board and work as a Tax Agent
- Those who work as a book-keeper and want further skills in taxation and higher level accounting and reporting skills and knowledge
- Those wishing to be fully qualified as an Accountant and a member of an accounting professional organisation
- Those people who do not want to gain the complete qualification but complete individual units as required for professional development or career advancement
Do I need any skills?
You will need to demonstrate that you have taxation, budgeting, management accounting, financial management, legal knowledge and well developed book-keeping skills and knowledge, which can be obtained in the Diploma of Accounting, Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) and Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical).
You will need an aptitude for finance and an interest in computer applications as demonstrated by an interest or work in the clerical/ book-keeping/ accounting industry or previous accounting study.

How will I learn?
Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options will include:
- Day or evening classes
- Studying off campus (some units) with a mixture of distance and on-line study
- Learning your skills in the workplace and receiving recognition by being assessed for those skills
- You may have partly completed a business qualification at University or at another TAFE college or Vocational Education and Training (VET) provider and be granted recognition for your knowledge.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:
- Projects
- Preparing financial records and reports for simulated business situations
- Preparing reports for management
- Being observed performing practical tasks
- On-line quizzes and tasks
- Short answers
- Examinations where required by the Tax Agents Board for Taxation competencies

When I complete my training, what's next?
Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:
- Working as a Clerical Officer, Office Manager, Payroll Officer, Book-keeper, Assistant Accountant or Accountant
- Be a registered book-keeper on joining a book-keeping professional organisation
- As a book-keeper, submit Business Activity Statement (BAS) returns for small businesses
- Joining the National Institute of Accountants as an Associate member
- Being a member of the Tax Agents Board after the required work experience
- Continuing study at Degree level at University and obtain the required work experience to obtain membership of CPA Australia or the Institute of Chartered Accountants. The Advanced Diploma of Accounting entitles people between 8-10 units of credit into the Bachelor of Business under the TAFE Tasmania/ University of Tasmania Articulation Agreement
What Competencies will I undertake?
To attain the Advanced Diploma of Accounting 13 units must be achieved, plus the pre-requisites:
- 4 Prerequisite core units
- 5 Prerequisite sectorial core units
- 1 core unit, plus
- 4 accounting electives, plus
- 3 'suggested' elective units.
Prerequisite Core units – complete all 4 units of competency
- FNSICGEN301B Communicate in the workplace
- FNSICGEN302B Use technology in the workplace
- FNSICGEN304B Apply health and safety practices in the workplace
- FNSICIND401B Apply principles of professional practice to work in the financial services industry
Prerequisite Sectoral core units from the Diploma – complete all 5 of the following units of competency
- FNSACCT502B Prepare income tax returns
- FNSACCT503B Manage budgets and forecasts
- FNSACCT504B Prepare financial reports for a reporting entity
- FNSACCT506B Implement and maintain internal control procedures
- FNSACCT507B Provide management accounting information
One sectoral core unit
- FNSACCT604B Monitor corporate governance activities
Suggested Accounting Electives (at least 4)
- FNSACCT601B Prepare complex tax returns and lodgement
- FNSACCT606B Conduct internal audit
- FNSACCT608B Evaluate organisation’s financial performance
- FNSACCT613B Prepare and analyse management accounting information

Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
