A career in the accounting, bookkeeping or financial services area is one of the most exciting choices a person can make. Accounting and Finance is the theme or backbone to all businesses and is a global language that crosses international borders.
In the Accounting and Finance Program area of TAFE Tasmania you will find many course options. You can study complete qualifications, or you may like to study just one or two subjects that meet your professional development requirements.
All subjects in our courses may be studied flexibly (ie new language for distant education). Some of the subjects are even offered online.
In order to gain admission into the entry level Certificate III programs, a good level of literacy and numeracy is required. Some subjects at the higher levels have pre-requisites.
If you are already working in the acounting or financial services area you can also have your existing skills and knowledge recognised through our recognition processes.

What job do you want?
Book-keeper/ Accounts Clerk/ Accounts Payable Officer/ Payroll Officer
Bookkeepers record financial transactions and may produce financial reports for businesses. They may work with an accountant to support them in having information entered correctly so that adjustments can be made at the end of the financial period and reports and taxation returns can be prepared.
Your first step to become a Bookkeeper is to complete a Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical). This takes 6 months full-time or you can enrol part-time choosing the units that will suit you. Part-time students might take 12-18 months to complete. Often students working in the industry gain recognition for the skills they already have and this shortens the time taken to complete the qualification.
To be a fully qualified book-keeper you will require a Certificate IV qualification which can be completed at TAFE Tasmania. Either the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) or the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) are appropriate qualifications to be a bookkeeper. These qualifications entitle holders to membership of the Bookkeeping professional associations, The Association of Accounting Technicians or the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers.
TAFE Tasmania also runs short courses regularly in MYOB for people with office experience wishing to update their computerised accounting/bookkeeping skills.

Accountant
Accountants analyse, report and give advice on the financial dealings of organisations and individuals, and provide advice on the associated record-keeping and compliance requirements.
To be qualified as an Accountant you will probably be a member of one of the three Accounting Associations; The National Institute of Accountants, CPA Australia or the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Entry requirements for the National Institute of Accountants are an Advanced Diploma of Accounting which can be completed at TAFE Tasmania. CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants require members to have a Bachelor of Business with an appropriate accounting specialisation at University level. The TAFE Tasmania qualifications, Diploma of Accounting and Advanced Diploma of Accounting both provide credit and articulate into the Bachelor of Business.

Costing Clerk/ Budget Accountant/ Budget Officer
Costing Officers allocate costs (such as labour, materials and general overheads) to jobs to provide accurate costs so profitability can be maintained. Budget Officers work to ensure that reports are up-to-date and actual spending and revenue is compared to the budget to make known and account for any variances. Costing and budgeting units are contained in the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) qualification. Costing and budgeting often rely heavily on good Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheet skills which are also contained in the Accounting specialisation qualifications. Basic to intermediate spreadsheet skills are part of the recommended Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) qualification and complex spreadsheets in the later accounting qualifications.

Tax Agent
Tax Agents prepare the Business Activity Statement returns and Income Tax returns for Individuals, Companies, Trusts Partnerships and other business structures. Currently there is a Tax Agents Board in every State that administers the role of a Tax Agent. Legislation is before federal Parliament to move this to one body for the whole of Australia. Currently the requirement is that applicants work under the direction of a tax agent and the educational requirements are to complete the taxation units from the Financial Services (Accounting) qualifications and the bookkeeping units.

Credit Management Officer
Credit Management Officers determine whether applications for credit or loans should be approved and mange the repayment of those outstanding amounts. TAFE Tasmania provides training in the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) which provides the necessary skills and knowledge for such positions.

ASIC tier 2 qualified Bank Officer/ Customer Services Officer
Anyone giving general advice to customers about financial products must be qualified under the Australian Securities and Investments Commission ASIC Policy Statement 146 to a tier 2 qualification. The ASIC Tier 2 qualification may be completed through a specific short course that can be studied flexibly using either print-based or online resources.
There is a requirement that ‘the licensee’ will identify the specific skills required to provide general advice against their own products and for the specific needs of their business. They must ensure that general advisers are trained and assessed against the knowledge requirements (specialist and generic) for the product they are advising on (as per the ASIC knowledge requirements from Appendix A of PS146).
The requirement for the skill and knowledge requirement can be demonstrated by achieving competency in the ‘general skills’ ASIC tier 2 units ‘Establish client relationship and analyse needs’ and ‘Develop present and negotiate client solutions’. TAFE Tasmania's ASIC Tier 2 course meets these requirements and successful participants can receive a specific State of Attainment upon completion.
