Aged Care and Enrolled Nursing - Statewide

Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing)

Diploma (HLT51607)


Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • People interested in a career in Nursing
  • People who have a Certificate 1V in Health (Nursing) qualification
  • People who have a Certificate 111 or above qualification in the Community Services or Health field.
  • People who are currently working in the Community Services or Health industry and want to gain a formal qualification


Do I need any skills?

The HLT51607 Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) units you will be studying will be made clear before you start your course. We will talk about these in our Information Session and you will also find them in the:

  • Induction booklet
  • Timetable

To be accepted in this course you will be required to undergo a selection process, which will include:

  • Numeracy and literacy skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Submission of a curriculum vitae
  • Applicants who have successfully completed a medical terminology course or equivalent are given preference for this course.

Enrolled Nursing students are expected to:

  • read and understand theory materials
  • calculate medication doses
  • read, interpret and follow workplace instructions and charts
  • accurately and legibly document client details
  • work as a team member
  • have effective written and verbal communicate
  • have well developed interpersonal skills
  • be able to meet the physical requirements of the job
  • assist clients to meet their personal care/physical needs
  • be available for shift work (during clinical placement)
  • be a self-directed learner

TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.

How long will it take?

Depending on your training and assessment needs and your chosen electives, it is expected you could complete the full Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 nursing) within 18 to 24 months.

Full time - 1½ years (4 days per week)
Part time - 2 years (2 days per week)

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options will include:

  • Clinical Placement – supervised experience in a variety of work settings and conditions
  • Campus Based Learning including:
    • Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
    • Classroom learning for theory
    • Simulated experiences
    • Guest Speakers
  • Learner Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
  • DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
  • Computer Assisted Learning – A self-paced system that gives you extra support and information.
  • Workshops/seminars – attending and/or participating.


How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures and Professional Nursing Standards must be followed. Options for assessment will include:

  • Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
  • Variety of Written Assessments.
  • Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based.
  • Practical – you will be observed demonstrating Clinical Skills.

Assessments will be undertaken by qualified TAFE Tasmania staff in conjunction with Workplace Assessors who are co-assessors whilst students are on clinical placement.

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Career opportunities may include working as an Enrolled Nurse (Medication Endorsed) within a nursing home, hospital, mental health, acute care and community settings. Successful completion of the certificate may also allow entry into a nursing degree with ‘credit’ and/or ‘advanced standing
  • Students may choose to upgrade to an Advanced Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 nursing).
  • At the completion of this course you will need to apply for enrolment with the Nursing Board of Tasmania (details can be found at www.nursingboardtas.org.au).


What Competencies will I undertake?

To achieve a Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) 26 units must be completed (21compulsory and 5 elective units)

Core units – 21 compulsory units

  • Work in the nursing profession
  • Apply effective communication skills in nursing practice
  • Comply with infection control policies and procedures in health work
  • Contribute to OHS processes
  • Work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
  • Apply legal and ethical parameters to nursing practice
  • Confirm physical health status
  • Analyse health information
  • Contribute to client assessment and developing nursing care plans
  • Implement and evaluate a plan of nursing care
  • Contribute to the complex nursing care of clients
  • Apply principles of wound management in the clinical environment
  • Administer and monitor medications in the work environment
  • Apply reflective practice, critical thinking and analysis in health
  • Implement and monitor nursing care for consumers with mental health conditions
  • Implement and monitor nursing care for clients with acute health problems
  • Implement and monitor nursing care for clients with chronic health problems
  • Implement and monitor nursing care for older clients
  • Apply understanding of the Australian health care system
  • Apply first aid

Electives (student will choose 5 of the following)

  • Maintain OHS processes
  • Implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures
  • Provide mentoring support to colleagues
  • Apply research skills within a contemporary health environment
  • Provide nursing care for clients requiring palliative care
  • Co-ordinate the work environment

Other electives may be offered upon demand on a commercial basis with fees negotiated upon time of application.

A maximum of two competency units may be selected from the Health and/or Community Services Training Packages to address specific workplace requirements.

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.

Consultation/Validation Process

A range of Health-based enterprises and The Nursing Board of Tasmania were consulted when the training and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.

Assessment Validation Process
A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Health, Aged and Enrolled Nursing Services teams meet annually to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment. The tools used for assessment will be those developed by Community Services and Health Industry Council and nationally endorsed.
