Description
This course is designed for people who have a Certificate III or equivalent combined with work experience in Aged Care or Disability Work who are seeking career opportunities in designing, conducting and evaluating day activity programs to promote health and well being.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- People who would like to work in the Health & Aged Care Services Industry
- People who are looking for a career change
- People who would like to gain skills by completing some units and not the entire qualification
- People with a background in Aged Care Work or Disability Work wishing to gain further knowledge and skills in the area of Lifestyle & Leisure
- People employed within Health & Aged Care industry may be eligible to undertake this qualification through an Australian Apprenticeship
Do I need any skills?
The Community Services Training Package (CHC02) units that you will be studying will be made clear to you before you start the course. We will discuss these at our Information Session and you will also find information in the: www.ntis.gov.au
Lifestyle & Leisure students are expected to:
- read and interpret workplace documents such as those relating to workplace health and safety and workplace policies and procedures
- record information about clients that is legible and accurate
- read and understand theory materials
- meet and greet the general public
- communicate well and work as part of a team
- utilise computer technology for research and documentation
TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.
How long will it take?
Depending on your available time and your learning needs, it is expected that you could complete the full Certificate IV in Community Services (Lifestyle & Leisure) within twelve (12) months through part-time study and work based projects.
Students who gain Recognition for some units will complete the qualification in less time.
Where can I learn?
This is an on campus courses and takes place at Wellington Square, Launceston in the North. You can also undertake some of the qualification off campus by engaging in work-based learning project work.
How will I learn?
Learning options will include:
- Work-based learning and project work either in your current role or through clinical placement
- Text’s, DVD’s, videos, learning packages, the internet and online learning resources will be utilised to supplement your learning during this course
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:
- Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the skills and knowledge needed to be assessed as competent in some or all units of the qualification. Ask for more information.
- Short written assessments – where you will be asked to supply a short answer to questions
- Projects – group or individual, these may be practical or research based
- Written assignments – where you will be asked to research topics and provide a written response
- Clinical Placement – where you will be working with clients as part of the health care team in a supernumerary capacity
- Completing tasks on the job and collect evidence of your ability to meet the requirements of the job
- Participants must successfully complete all assessment tasks to meet the requirements of the course
When I complete this training, what's next?
On successful completion of this course you may wish to further your qualification by completing the Diploma of Community Services (Lifestyle & Leisure).
What Competencies will I undertake?
To achieve a Certificate IV in Community Services (Lifestyle & Leisure), 16 units must be completed comprising:
- 9 compulsory units, plus
- 7 elective units
Compulsory units – complete all 9 units of competency:
- Utilise specialist communication skills to build strong relationships
- Work within a legal and ethical framework
- Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
- Orientation to work in the leisure and health industry
- Leisure and health programming
- Develop leisure and health programs for clients with special needs
- Co-ordinate, implement and monitor leisure and health programs
- Facilitate co-operative behaviour
And one of the following units:
- Participate in workplace safety procedures OR
- Participate in safety procedures for direct care work
PLUS
Elective units – complete 7 of the following units of competency:
Group 1
- Undertake administrative work
- Apply a community development framework
- Identify and respond to children and young people at risk of harm
- Co-ordinate the provision of services and programs
- Respond holistically to client issues
- Provide advanced behaviour support
- Plan and conduct group activities
- Work with other services
- Recruit and co-ordinate volunteers
- Maintain an effective work environment
- Apply basic First Aid
- Apply advanced First Aid
- Assist with recreation games not requiring equipment
- Develop recreation programs OR
- Develop and implement community programs
- Process and maintain workplace information OR
- Comply with information requirements of the aged care and community care sectors
Group 2 Aged Care
- Orientation to aged care work
- Support the older person to meet their emotional and psychosocial needs
- Provide care support which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia
- Conduct a recreation program for older persons
Group 3 Disability
- Orientation to disability work
- Plan and implement community integration
- Design and adapt surroundings to group requirements
- Conduct a recreational program for people with a disability
- Implement community inclusion processes for people with a disability
Group 4 Mental Health
- Orientation to mental health work
- Provide support services to clients
Group 5 Alcohol and Other Drugs
- Orientation to alcohol and other drugs work
- Support people with alcohol and/or other drugs issues
Group 6 Youth
- Support youth programs
- Work effectively with young people
Group 7 Working with Specific Groups
- Respond holistically to client issues
- Work effectively with culturally diverse clients, customers and co-workers
- Work effectively in a cross cultural context with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations
Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.

Consultation/Validation Process
A range of Lifestyle and Leisure enterprises and individuals were consulted to develop learning and assessment strategies for this qualification on a local and state-wide basis.
Assessment tasks are developed in consultation with representatives from industry /enterprises. All assessment tasks are validated by at least 2 teaching staff *. Assessment decisions are moderated by a minimum of 2 teaching staff * and industry/enterprises representatives.
* Teaching staff are preferably from different teams and/or regions.
