Service Co-ordination (Ageing & Disability)

Description
Workers in this occupational group work in residential facilities and/or community care agencies. These workers apply knowledge and skills gained through qualifications or previous experience to resolve problems within organisational guidelines. These workers coordinate specific programs and/or projects and supervise and/or coordinate a limited number of lower classified workers or volunteers and report to service managers. They may undertake a first line management role.
Workers at this level: are not responsible for clinical components of assessment care planning and would be expected to consult with professionals in relation to clinical issues; are required to have an understanding of how to work with local communities in the provision of services; are required to have an understanding of indigenous culture and history and to work with local communities in the provision of services.

Do I need any skills?
The following Certificate III units or equivalent experience are pre-requisites:
- CHCAC3C Orientation to Aged Care Work AND
- CHCDIS10B Provide Care and Support OR
- CHCDIS1B Orientation to Disability Work
The Community Services Training Package (CHC02) units that you will be studying will be made clear to you before you start the course. We will discuss these at our Information Session and you will also find information at: www.ntis.gov.au
Aged Care, Home & Community Care students need to be able to:
- record information about resident’s or client’s care that is accurate and legible
- read and interpret workplace documents such as those relating to workplace health and safety and workplace policies and procedures
- communicate well with other people and their families and work as part of a team
TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.
How long will it take?
Clarence Campus - Part-time, February - November 2008 (course is available every second year)
Students who gain Recognition for some units will complete the qualification in less time.

How will I learn?
This course will enable you to work effectively with older people in a residential facility.
Learning options will include:
- Work-based learning and project work either in your current role or through clinical placement
- Text’s, DVD’s, videos, learning packages, the internet, online learning resources will be utilised to supplement your learning during this course
- Attendance at classes on campus where you will participate in workshops and simulations
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:
- Recognition – if you are already working in the industry you may be able to show that you already have the skills and knowledge needed to be assessed as competent in some or all units of the qualification. Ask for more information.
- Short written assessments – where you will be asked to supply a short answer to questions
- Projects – group or individual, these may be practical or researched based
- Assignments – research topics and provide a written response
- Written assessments – where you will be asked to research topics and provide a written response
- Practical – you will be asked to complete the tasks on-the-job
- Participants must successfully complete all assessment tasks to meet the requirements of the course
When I complete this training, what's next?
On completion of this course you may wish to gain further relevant qualifications.
Work may include training and support to promote independence and community participation. This may be provided as part of activities and programs in a variety of settings including residential and centre-based programs.

Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.

Consultation/Validation Process
A range of Health & Aged Care enterprises and individuals were consulted to develop learning and assessment strategies for this qualification on a local and state-wide basis.
Assessment tasks are developed in consultation with representatives from industry /enterprises. All assessment tasks are validated by at least 2 teaching staff *. Assessment decisions are moderated by a minimum of 2 teaching staff * and industry/enterprises representatives.
* Teaching staff are preferably from different teams and/or regions.
