Certificate IV ( CUS40101 )


Description

This course aims to provide a broad range of skills for those who wish to work in the Music Industry.

The Certificate IV in Music is both an ideal launching pad for further musical studies, and an opportunity to gain skills, knowledge and contacts, increasing employment prospects in the local and national Music Industry.

Music is both an industry and an art form, meeting cultural and recreational needs while also offering employment opportunities across many sectors: recording, publishing, retail, radio, television, film video, advertising, computer software, multimedia, teaching, and of course, performance.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

This qualification is suitable for people wishing to gain employment in the Music Industry, expand their knowledge of music and gain a qualification, or, as an introduction to tertiary musical studies.

Do I need any skills?

Interview and Portfolio to demonstrate an appropriate level of creative ability and theoretical knowledge to enable successful completion of the program.

Students are required to attend a Selection Interview. Selection Interviews are held in November each year.

How long will it take?

  • 1 year, full-time (includes required Certificate III competencies)
  • 2-3 years part-time

How will I learn?

The Certificate IV in Music will be based around classroom delivery of theoretical aspects, technical information, and research and analysis activities.

Students will perform Music within the general community and work on real and simulated industry experiences. Students will be required to work independently (with guidance) on personal music performance skills.

Students will work in studio environments recording and producting individual projects and in collaboration with others.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health and Safety procedures must be followed.

  • Assessment takes place throughout the year and at the end of projects
  • Assessment will happen on the job and/or in a simulated workplace.
  • Individual assessments may include: assessment checklists, workbooks, assignments, portfolios, projects, student presentations.
  • Strategies may include: demonstrations, studio-based observation, exhibitions, presentation, role play, case studies, self and peer assessments.

When I complete this training, what's next?

Careers include:

  • Live Performance - mixers/audio engineers, designers and technicians.
  • Concert Halls & Venues - sound engineers, technicians, administrative and management staff.
  • Radio, Film & Television - music programmers, music directors, music promoters, music video specialists, technical staff, sound track producers, editors and mixers.
  • Advertising - jingle writers, musical directors and music librarians.
  • Music Teaching - schools, higher education and private studios.
  • Recording - record producers, studio engineers, technicians and music archivists.
  • Music Media - music critics, musicologists and researchers, music journalists and on air presenters.

What Competencies will I undertake?

To obtain a Certificate IV in Music you require 3 units in Group A plus at least 7 units from Group B and 4 others from either Group B or Certificate IV unit bank.

Group A

  • Address Copyright Requirements
  • Maintain and Apply Music Industry Knowledge
  • Follow Health, Safety and Security Procedures in the Music Industry

Group B

  • Compose a Simple Song or Tune
  • Create a Simple Accompaniment for a Song or Tune
  • Use Midi Devices and/or Software to Compose Music
  • Maintain and Expand Music Knowledge and Critical Listening Skills
  • Prepare Self for Performance
  • Develop and Practice Improvisation
  • Perform Music as Part of a Group
  • Perform Music as a Soloist

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.
