Description
This course aims to provide a broad range of skills for those who wish to work in the Music Industry.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
People who are looking to develop their basic knowledge of audio technology and take them to the next step by applying that knowledge to a range of projects in the area of sound re-inforcement, recording, radio and sound for video.
Do I need any skills?
Students are required to attend a Selection Interview. Selection Interviews are held in November each year. Previous experience in sound/or music is preferred but not essential.
How long will it take?
- 12 months , full-time (includes required Certificate III competencies)

How will I learn?
A series of project work, classroom work and observed activities. The work involves taking the learning to the next level via studio work, industry work and a range of relevant activities.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health and Safety procedures must be followed.
- Assessment takes place throughout the training period and at the end of projects
- Assessment will happen on the job and/or in a simulated workplace, activities.
- Individual assessments may include: assessment checklists, workbooks, assignments, portfolios, music projects, student presentations.
- Strategies may include: demonstrations, studio-based observation, written work, presentation, role play and case studies.
When I complete this training, what's next?
Music is both an industry and an artform, meeting cultural and recreational needs while also offering major employment opportunities across many sectors: recording, publishing, retail, music business, entertainment, radio, television, film video, advertising, computer software. Multimedia, teaching, and of course, performance.
Occupations include:
- Live Performance - mixers/audio engineers, designers and technicians.
- Concert Halls & Venues - sound engineers, technicians, administrative and management staff.
- Radio, Film & Television - music programmers, music directors, music promoters, music video specialists, technical staff, sound track producers, editors and mixers.
- Advertising - jingle writers, musical directors and music librarians.
- Music Teaching - schools, higher education and private studios.
- Recording - record producers, studio engineers, technicians and music archivists.
- Music Media - music critics, musicologists and researchers, music journalists and on air presenters.
What Competencies will I undertake?
To obtain a Certificate IV in Music Industry (Technical Production) achieve 14 units: five units in Group A, five units in Group B and four units in Unit Bank at Certificate IV level. Two of these units can be from another endorsed training package at Certificate IV level.

Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.
