Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts

Certificate IV ( CUV40203)


Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • People of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin
  • Graduates of the Certificate III in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts
  • Existing Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Visual Arts or contemporary craft practitioners wanting recognition of skills and/or acquisition of new or upgraded skills.
  • People wanting to gain specific skills rather than that a full qualification e.g. Wood carving or digital photography

Do I need any skills?

Although there are no specific pre-requisites for entry into the Certificate IV program it is recommended that all applicants attend an interview with teaching staff to ensure that they have the creative aptitude and basic literacy and numeracy skills required to successfully complete the program.

We can provide recognition from a similar qualification or evidence of equivalent skills, knowledge and experience.

How long will it take?

  • Depending on your learning and assessment needs and your chosen electives, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate IV in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts within one (1) year.
  • Students who successfully complete this qualification can progress into the second year, which is the Diploma of Art, Craft and Design.
  • Depending on your learning and assessment needs and your chosen electives, it is expected that you could complete the full Diploma of Art, Craft and Design with the second year of study.

Based at the Clarence Campus - Bounty Street, Warrane

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on the job, off the job or a combination of both. Options will include:

  • Studio based training at Clarence Campus
  • On the job, in your own workplace
  • On the job, through work placements with established practitioners
  • A combination of the above.

Training is based around completion of projects that incorporate clusters of relevant competencies. Skills and knowledge are developed during projects that simulate typical product development processes from concept to production

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health and Safety procedures must be followed. Methods of assessment include:

  • Observation of completion of tasks
  • Assessment of completed project work
  • Participation in projects and activities such as exhibitions or displays
  • Completion of written assignments
  • Oral and Visual Presentations

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Entry into the Visual Arts and Contemporary Crafts Industry as a self employed practitioner
  • Employment with an established practitioner in the Visual Arts and Contemporary Crafts industry
  • Employment with a Gallery or retailer of Visual Arts and Contemporary Crafts products
  • Further study with TAFE Tasmania in a Diploma of Art, Craft and Design
  • Further Study at the University of Tasmania, School of Art

What Competencies will I undertake?

Completion of Certificate IV in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts requires competency in

  • 7 core units plus
  • at least 11 electives

Core

  • CUVCOR04A Originate concept for own work and conduct critical discourse
  • CUFSAF01BB Follow Health and Safety and Security Procedures
  • CUVCOR09A Select and apply drawing techniques and media to represent and communicate the concept.
  • CUVPRP02A Develop understanding of own Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity
  • CUVPRP03A Develop and apply knowledge of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts practice
  • CUVPRP04A Produce work which expresses own Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity
  • CUVCOR13A Research and critically analyse history and theory to inform artistic practice

Elective units

At least 2 units must be selected from one or more of the following areas of the Visual Arts Craft and Design training package.

  • Ceramics
  • Digital Art
  • Drawing
  • Jewellery
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture
  • Textiles/Fibre
  • Video Art
  • Wood
  • Design
  • Photo-imaging

In addition, at least 2 units must be selected from one or more of the following areas of the Visual Arts Craft and Design training package.

  • Professional practice
  • Small business
  • Research and innovation

Remaining units may be selected from other areas of the Visual Arts Crafts and Design training package or any relevant endorsed training package at the appropriate level.

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.

Assessment Validation Process & Consultation

Studio/teacher coordinators meet at least annually with teaching peers and representative industry practitioners from their specific subject/media area. During the meeting/s reviewing, comparing and evaluating our assessment process, tools and evidence occurs. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment. All aspects of course structure, delivery and assessment are discussed.

A range of visual Arts and Contemporary Crafts Industry experts were consulted when the learning and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
