Photoimaging

Certificate IV (CUV40403)


Description

This study program combines strong studio based practical training and theory. There is always a strong emphasis on developing personal creative skills. All major aspects of photographic training are offered, digital and traditional film based practices and studio and outdoor photography.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

Senior secondary graduates, arts/photography graduates, arts/ photography practitioners and art and photography administrators, mature aged people, career changers and international students.

Do I need any skills?

Entrants wishing to enrol in this course must satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent
  • Completion of Year 10 or equivalent plus related studies and/or work experience equal to two years
  • Where experience and / or qualifications are indicative of success in the course.

Also requires are the following:

Portfolio - Submission of a portfolio at the interview

Computer literacy - Ideally, you will need to have a reasonable working knowledge of the PC Windows or Mac environment. Both platforms are used. Required computer literacy skills include:

  • Being able to logically organise work files in directories or computer files
  • Knowing how to make a file, save a file, and find it again
  • Using the internet to find information, send emails, open and save attachments and pictures
  • Simple text skills; for example, typing up an assignment with basic formatting and printing it out
  • Resolve minor application problems through the use of the help menu.

To successfully complete this course, entrants should possess language, literacy and numeracy levels. This is demonstrated by:

Reading – a learner will be able to read and interpret texts of some complexity, integrating (where relevant) a number of pieces of information in order to generate meaning and interpret and extrapolate from texts containing data, which is unambiguously presented in graphic, diagrammatic, formatted or visual form.

Writing – a learner will be able to communicate relationships between ideas through selecting and using grammatical structures and notations, which are appropriate to the purpose.

Oral communication – a learner will be able to participate in short transactions, using basic generic structures, to establish, maintain and develop relationships, explore issues or problem solve.

Numeracy and mathematics – a learner will be able to select and apply a range of mathematical strategies to solve problems in a number of contexts, which are familiar and may be interrelated.

A learner will also be able to reflect on and question the reasonableness and appropriateness of the purpose, process and outcomes of a mathematical activity and use symbols and diagrams to communicate mathematically.

How long will it take?

Depending on your learning and assessment needs and your chosen electives, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate IV in Photo-imaging within one (1) year.

Students who successfully complete Cert IV in Photo-imaging can progress into the second year, which is the Diploma Photo-imaging. Depending on your learning and assessment needs and your chosen electives, it is expected you could complete the full Diploma Photo-imaging within the second year of study.

Enrolment Procedure:

  • Interview
  • Submission of portfolio to showcase the applicant’s creative and artistic ability. (Note: this may not be required if the student’s work has previously been assessed at TAFE)
  • Applicant notified of success of application
  • Place confirmed on payment of fees (or first instalment)

How will I learn?

Training is based around completion of projects that incorporate a cluster of relevant competencies. Projects simulate typical photo-imaging based project work in regard to briefing, client interaction and meeting timelines. Where practical, real time projects are undertaken for internal and external clients who are required to provide feedback to students.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Individual assessments may include:

  • assessment checklists,
  • journals, assignments,
  • portfolios,
  • products,
  • student presentations.

Strategies may include:

  • demonstrations,
  • studio-based observations,
  • presentation,
  • role play,
  • case studies,
  • self and peer assessments.

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Students who complete the entire Certificate IV Photo-imaging may enrol into:
  • Full or part-time training that leads to a Diploma Photo-imaging.

This course aims to equip participants with a range of skills and underpinning knowledge to work in a range of design based industries in a creative/technical capacity.

What Competencies will I undertake?

Certificate IV Photo-imaging CUV40403 Units

To be awarded a Certificate IV in Photo-imaging, 18 units must be completed comprising: 11 core units, plus 7 electives. The electives give further training in areas like Darkroom processes, cultural studies, alternative processes, and combining digital and film based processes in imagery.

  • CUVPHI06A Plan and carry out image capture in response to a brief.
  • CUVPHI07A Process photo-images to work print/file stage.
  • CUVPHI08A Enhance, manipulate and output photo-images.

Elective Units

  • CUVCOR12A Review history and theory for application to artistic practice.
  • CUVPHI02A Develop self for photo-imaging practice.
  • CUVPHI05A Use a 35mm SLR or camera digital equivalent.
  • CUVPHI09A Use colour materials, processing and printing techniques in a wet darkroom context.
  • CUVVSP11A Apply techniques to produce digital images.
  • ICPMM43CA Incorporate digital photography into multimedia presentation.

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.

Assessment Validation Process

The Institute of TAFE Tasmania will validate this strategy annually via a staff moderation process and reference to an arts industry group.
