Description
The theoretical and practical course is designed to reflect the role of individuals working in arts administration. Students participate in practical projects in simulated environments, museums, gallery restaurants and/or public galleries.
The Arts Administration course has two strands running concurrently throughout the year.
A generic arts administration strand relevant to all art forms covering planning, financing and marketing.
A practical application strand which focuses on devising, developing and presenting a range of real and simulated exhibitions and events.
The course will incorporate a combination of learning strategies including class work, excursions and practical experience. The course is also suited to those who are currently employed in an arts administration role where they are able to develop their skills on the job.

Do I need any skills?
Interview to demonstrate an appropriate level of ability to enable successful completion of the program, and an active involvement in the visual and performing arts.

Where can I learn?
- Statewide. Attendance at workshops/tutorials in Launceston or Hobart will be required.
How will I learn?
The formal learning will be structured around activities based in Hobart and Launceston. These structured activities will normally be restricted to one full-day a week. In addition, research and project activities will take place at various times during the year. The work loads will vary and will be individually negotiated to suit specific projects and workplaces and to take advantage of opportunities to engage in projects in the community that may arise.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be based on class participation, observation, workbook activities, a reflective journal, practical work, presentations and outcomes from projects. Some assessment activities will be part of the formal structure and others will be negotiated to suit individual student needs.
When I complete this training, what's next?
Graduates may choose to work as assistants in museums and/or art galleries, community/public art organisations and/or as a curator for individual studio-based exhibitions/artists. Links are also made with Library and Museum Studies.
The successful completion of the Certificate IV may also lead to opportunities for further studies in Arts Management at Advanced Diploma level.
What Competencies will I undertake?
The Certificate IV in Arts Administration comprises 19 units:
- 6 core
- 13 others (of which two must be from Business services)

- Research and Critique Cultural Works
- Select and prepare work for exhibition
- Install and dismantle small exhibitions
- Assist with the Movement and Storage of Objects
- Make Presentations
In addition to the NINE electives listed above, students will be required to complete FOUR units that relate to their own area of specialisation. These units can be completed by:
- Enrolling in the appropriate classes at TAFE
- Obtaining recognition for previous training completed at TAFE
- Enrolling at TAFE and obtaining recognition for current and previous activities that relate to those units
Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
Additional costs apply in this course for text books and stationery, protective clothing and equipment, travelling expenses, as well as tools, minor equipment and project materials as required.

Assessment Validation Process
The Institute of TAFE Tasmania will validate this strategy annually via a staff moderation process and reference to an arts industry group.
