What is an Australian Apprenticeship?
An Australian Apprenticeship is an employment based training arrangement
where apprentices or employees and their employer enter into
a formal Training Agreement with the State/Territory Training
Authority. An Australian Apprenticeship combines practical experience
in the workplace with structured training negotiated
where any
gap in skills is identified.
The outcome of a successful Australian Apprenticeship is a nationally
recognised qualification.
Who is eligible?
There are two types of Australian Apprenticeships: the first is for new
employees (User Choice) and the second is for
people who are already working in your business (Existing
Employee).
To be eligible, User Choice apprentices must be working either
full time (not exceeding 12 weeks in current position) or
part time/casual (not exceeding 52 weeks in current position)
for a minimum of 20 hours per week prior to entering a Training
Agreement.
Existing employees must be currently employed full-time
or part-time (for a minimum of 20 hours per week) with no
qualification above Certificate II.
Australian Apprenticeships are available for people aged between 15 and
64 years.

How does an Australian Apprenticeship work?
Full time Australian Apprenticeships are normally a 12 month or 2 year
and part time 18 months/3 years training program, depending
on the ship.
An individual Training Plan is negotiated between the TAFE
Tasmania assessor, the employer and the apprentice. Units of
competence can be chosen to reflect the needs of the business
and the apprentice or employee. The TAFE Tasmania assessor will
assist in identifying the most appropriate choices.
How much do apprentices get paid?
Apprentices may be paid under the National Training Wage according
to the type of apprenticeship undertaken. The wage rate
is determined by the level of schooling completed and
the
number of years since leaving school.
Alternatively, apprentices may be paid under the relevant
Award.
