Electrotechnology

Certificate I (UTE10102 )

Description

Those completing this program successfully will be able to seek employment in all Electrotechnology Trades.

Statistics from previous years indicate that a majority of students who have successfully completed this program gain employment in the Electrotechnology Trades.

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • Those wishing to enter into a career in the Electrotechnology industry.
  • People looking for a change in career
  • Advantageous if looking for an Electrotechnology Apprenticeship

Do I need any skills?

  • Language: It's important to have good reading and writing skills because the Electrotechnology industry is always moving ahead; you need to keep up to date with safety issues, quality standards and technological advances, complete worksheets and provide written records.
  • Mathematics: The basic foundations for all electrotechnology workers are good math skills; these skills are used in practical, everyday situations. Just as a builder has to measure his materials an electrician has to measure things like current and voltage. This means you need to be comfortable working with numbers, even if that means using a calculator.
  • Science: Many of the maths skills you need are closely linked to a basic knowledge of science; you work the numbers within the scientific rules. Many of these 'rules' or 'laws' were written hundreds of years ago after practical experiments conducted by scientists and they haven't changed since, so you only have to learn them once.
  • Basic hand tool skills

TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.

How long will it take?

The course is generally completed within 6 months

Where can I learn?

Claremont Campus (Refrigeration and Air-conditioning) Link Road, Claremont
Launceston Alanvale Campus - Alanvale Road, Newnham
Burnie Campus - Moorevile Road

How will I learn?

Learning will be primarily off-the-job with a period of work or vocational placement, subject to the demonstration of competency in relevant units and availability of suitable placements.

  • At a TAFE campus
  • Classroom learning for theory
  • Training is supported by resource manuals and text books
  • Simulated work environment
  • Work placement for practical experience where appropriate
  • Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment may include:

  • Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • Short written assessment – question and answer style tests – paper or computer based
  • Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based
  • Practical – you will be observed doing tasks
  • Assignments – research topic and provide written response
  • Training Record Books / Profiling

When I complete this training, what’s next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Employment as an Apprentice (Electrician, Refrigeration, Data and Communications, Electronics, Instrumentation, Security and more)
  • Employment in allied electrotechnology sectors
  • Defence Force careers
  • Support areas in the Electrotechnology industry i.e. retail, wholesale
