Certificate IV (WRH40106)

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • People who have a Certificate III in Hairdressing qualification.
  • People who have completed some units of the Certificate IV in hairdressing and now wanting the entire qualification
  • People who have a Certificate III in Hairdressing qualification and would like to gain skills by completing some units and not the entire qualification.

Do I need any skills?

English language, literacy and other skill requirements
The Hairdressing Training Package (WRH06) units you will be studying will be made clear before you start your course. Will we talk about these in our Information Session, and you will also find them in the:

  • Induction booklet
  • Timetable.

Hairdressing students are expected to:

  • read and interpret manufacturers instructions for use of chemicals and other information required for Occupational Health & Safety Purposes
  • write details in appointment book
  • write in a legible manner for safety with chemicals
  • assisting senior staff with written instructions
  • update client record card outlining tasks completed (eg perm, colour etc)
  • meet and greet clients and complete paperwork required
  • read and understand theory materials
  • deal easily with formal maths (eg balance cash register, wages)

TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.

If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests).


How long will it take?

Hobart City Campus (Information & Enrolment Days)

Depending on your learning and assessment needs and your chosen electives, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate IV in Hairdressing within one (1) year.

Launceston Alanvale Campus (Information & Enrolment Days)

Depending on your learning and assessment needs and your chosen electives, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate IV in Hairdressing within one (1) year.

Devonport Campus Depending on your learning and assessment needs, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate IV in Hairdressing within one (1) year.

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. It may include:

  • Off-the-job – Simulated Salon – Learning will be in the Institute of TAFE Tasmania areas that are set-up to run the same way as a hairdressing salon.
  • On-the-job – training in your workplace.
  • Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
  • Learner Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
  • DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
  • Computer Assisted Learning – A self-paced system that gives you extra support and information.
  • Classroom learning for theory.
  • Technical workshops/seminars – attending and/or participating.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. You may be assessed by:

  • Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
  • Short written assessments – question and answer style test.
  • Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based.
  • Assignments – research topic and provide a written response.
  • Practical – you will be observed doing tasks.
  • You may be able to be assessed in your workplace.
  • If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests)
  • Observation Checklist - checklist to ensure all unit elements have been covered according to the Training Package.


When I complete this qualification, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this qualification, further study or career options may include:

  • Students who complete selected units only, may enrol in the entire Certificate IV in Hairdressing
  • Full or part-time training that leads to a Diploma of Hairdressing Salon Management
  • Career opportunities may include working as a highly skilled hairdresser, work as part of salon team or co-ordinate a salon team, be a technical advisor within a product company, work independently as a freelance session stylist.

What Competencies will I undertake?

To achieve a Certificate IV in Hairdressing, 11 units must be completed comprising:

  • 7 core units, plus
  • 4 elective units.
    (A full list of electives are available on request and are dependent on demand.)
    Not all electives are available in all regions.

Core units – complete all 7 units of competency

  • WRHCL305A Perform on scalp full head and re-touch bleach services
  • WRHCL406A Solve complex colour problems
  • WRHHC410A Design and perform creative haircuts
  • WRHHD304A Design and apply long hair design finishes
  • WRHHD406A Work as a session stylist
  • WRRER2B Coordinate work teams
  • WRRLP3B Maintain store safety

Two of the 4 elective units may be substituted by units from the following endorsed Training Packages, must relate to the core function or role of the candidate’s current or intended work environment, and must be from a Certificate IV or Diploma qualification:

  • WRB04 Beauty Training Package
  • BSB01 Business Services Training Package
  • CUE03 Entertainment Training Package
  • WRR02 Retail Training Package.

2008 Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process

A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Hairdressing team and/or representatives from Tasmanian Hairdressing Salons, meet at least once a year and often twice to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.

Consultation

A range of Hair and Beauty Salons, who have Apprentices studying with TAFE Tasmania, were consulted when the learning and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
