General Description
This qualification is designed to reflect the role of individuals, who use a range of specialized, technical or managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate the work of self and/or team
The Library Technician is an employee trained to perform a variety of library and information tasks in support of the work of the professional librarian.
It is assumed that students undertaking the course will either be currently employed in a library or intend to take up such employment.

Do I need any skills?
Pre-Requisite: Certificate III in Library/Information Services Pathway
units.
Potential learners must attend a pre-enrolment interview at which their suitability for the course will be assessed.
Applicants will be assessed on their ability:
- To communicate effectively on a one to one basis and in a group
- To commit themselves to study
- To communicate in verbal and written formats
- To show aptitude to work in the library and information environment
- To demonstrate familiarity with basci computer operations and internet searching
Keyboarding skills and computer literacy are an important competency in the library industry and form an integral part of the training.
As there is a pre requisite for good language, literacy and numeracy skills, most students do not require additional assistance. If a student does demonstrate a need for further learning or counselling, we will arrange a consultation with Student Services and/or Pathways - Literacy.
When I complete this training whats next?
The Library Technicians may be employed in all types of library or information agencies such as: university and college, state and public, private, special schools and other information agencies.
Graduates of the Diploma can progress to the Advanced Diploma Library/Information Services and/or to Professional Librarianship Courses at Diploma, Degree and eventually Post Graduate levels. Credit is received for their TAFE study.

How will I learn?
On/off job, regulatory requirements, analysis of units to identify specific delivery modes, flexible delivery approaches.
- On campus delivery will occur in classrooms, TAFE Libraries, computing laboratories of the RTO and simulated workplace situations.
- The workplace and RTO co-operate in the delivery of the selected units with the provision of necessary resources/equipment and provide the learner with the opportunities required to develop the competence.
- Training program outline to be negotiated with the learner, workplace and RTO to establish the above and training assessment time frames.
- When a workplace supervisor has assessor qualifications the RTO will supply a training coordinator to ensure training and assessment requirements are met.
- Assessors require industry related qualifications as detailed within the LIS Training package
- Costs are considered to ensure training and assessment is practicable, and designed to ensure efficiency for the workplace and the RTO
- The RTO and the workplace will monitor all OH&S issues for learners

Assessment only/training and Assessment
- All learners given the opportunity to apply for RCC/RPL (recognition) for units related to the qualification
- Where a learner can demonstrate current skill in some elements of the unit of competence, they will be given the opportunity to fast track the unit.
- Each learners level of underpinning knowledge will be assessed and the learner will then be provided with a negotiated training program in an on &/or off-the-job mode to develop the competence.
- Timely assessments will be provided in line with progression.

To attain the CUL50104 Diploma of Library/Information Services 18 units must be achieved:
- 10 core units; plus
- 8 other units with at least 3 from one or more of the areas within the Museum and Library/Information Training Package. The remaining may be selected from any endorsed Training Package.

Fees
Fees effective from 1/1/2008
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).
