Forest Growing and Management
Certificate II (FPI20105)
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- Students who enrol in this course must be employed in the Forest Industry.
- People currently working in the forest industry and wanting to gain a qualification.
- People who have completed some units of a Certificate II in the Forestry training package and now wanting the entire qualification.
- People looking to further their career in the forest industry.
- People who are currently employed in the industry as Apprentices or Trainees.
- People who would like to gain skills by completing some units and not the entire qualification.
Do I need any skills?
There is no age limit to enrol in this qualification.
Forestry students are expected to:
- follow instructions and procedures
- work as part of a team
- work independently
- have a liking of working outdoors and an interest in the Timber Industry
- follow Occupational Health & Safety Guidelines
TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the learning and assessment requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.
How long will it take?
Depending on your learning and assessment needs, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate II in Forest Growing and Management within one (1) year.
Where can I learn?
At your worksite in Tasmania, at TAFE Tasmania campuses in Clarence, Alanvale and Burnie, or at an agreed destination, for example a group of students from different employers may come together on a selected forestry coupe or at a selected training facility.
How will I learn?
Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options may include:
- Off-the-job – learning for specific units (eg First Aid) will be at an Institute of TAFE Tasmania campus or at an agreed destination.
- On-the-job – training in your workplace.
- Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
- Learner Guides – books that contain information to help with your learning.
- Classroom learning for theory.
- Industry experts – may be used to assist with training needs.
As a learner, we understand that you may need additional support. TAFE Tasmania provides an extensive range of support in the areas of numeracy and literacy, career and personal counselling and assistance with progressing your studies. To access any of these services please refer to the student information booklet, the TAFE Tasmania public web site or ask your trainer. All enquiries are treated in a confidential manner.
What resources will I need?
For any class conducted by TAFE Tasmania you will require paper and pen. We will supply all work books and printed materials associated with your training.
Equipment requirements, (students will need to supply the following):
- Steel capped safety boots (lace-up)
- High visibility outer garment
- Full face safety helmet with hearing protection
- Cut resistant leg protection
- TAFE Tasmania will supply all equipment associated with commercial chainsaw courses.
All equipment and machinery associated with machinery and 4WD training is supplied by your employer. All training in this area will be on equipment that you use in your every day work. Our trainers will consult with you and your employer about equipment availability and suitability prior to conducting the training.
How will I be assessed?
Please consult your student information booklet for detailed information on the assessment process. If you don’t have one of these they are available from your assessor. During all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment can include:
- Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the ability to perform the required tasks. Ask us for more information.
- Short written assessment – question and answer style test.
- Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based (eg risk assessment).
- Practical – you will be observed doing tasks.
- Testimonials – statements from an industry colleague.
- Apprentices may be assessed in their workplace.
- If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests).

TAFE Tasmania provide qualified assessors who hold the qualification you are being assessed in or an equivalent or higher qualification in line with the training package requirements. Where assessment is conducted by a third party this assessment will be auspiced by TAFE Tasmania.
When I complete this training, what's next?
Depending on how you completed this qualification, further study or career options may include:
- Students who complete selected units only, may enrol in the entire Certificate II in Forest Growing and Management
- Further training options may include Certificate III in Forest Growing and Management, Certificate II or III in Harvesting and Haulage.
- Leading Hand or Crew Leader.

- select an additional 3 units from Group B below
- select an additional 2 units from Groups B and/or C below
- select an additional 2 units from Groups B, C and/or D below.

Assessment Validation Process
All forestry team assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Forestry team regularly meet with other Forest Industry Assessors to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.
The Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s Forestry Team incorporate the ForestWorks nationally validated assessment tools in their assessment process.
Consultation
A range of Forest Growing and Management (Silviculture) contractors, who have Apprentices studying with TAFE Tasmania, FIAPS and representatives from ForestWorks were consulted when the training and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
