Certificate III (RTE30103)
Description
This course develops knowledge and skills to tradesperson level.
Only the off-the-job component of the course is offered. When employed, students may apply to complete the on-the-job component that will give them the full qualification of Certificate III in Agriculture.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- People currently working in the Rural Industry and wanting to gain a qualification
- People who have completed some units of the Certificate I or Certificate II in Agriculture and now wanting the entire qualification
- People who would like to work in the Rural industry.
- People looking for a change in career.
- People who would like to gain skills by completing some units and not the entire qualification.
- People who need to gain skills to satisfy various industry licensing requirements.
Do I need any skills?
The Rural Industry Training Package (RTE30102) units you will be studying will be made clear before you start your course. We will discuss these in our Information Session, and you will also find them in the:
- Induction booklet that is provided to all students
- Training Plan for Trainees and Apprentices.
Students entering Certificate III in Agriculture are required to have completed Certificate II in Agriculture or be able to demonstrate competence at that level.
Agricultural students are expected to:
- read and interpret manufacturers instructions for use of chemicals and other information required for Occupational Health & Safety Purposes
- keep production and other essential records
- deal easily with basic maths
- have a keen interest in practical agricultural work
TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.
If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests).
How long will it take?
Depending on your learning and assessment needs, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate III in Agriculture within two (2) years.

Workplace Based
How will I learn?
Trainees / Apprentices
This course is for people who are currently employed in a rural workplace, and have a Training Contract. Depending on you and your employers needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both Learning options will include:
- Off-the-job – Learning will be in the Institute of TAFE Tasmania, or in an appropriate venue.
- On-the-job – training in your workplace.
- Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
- Learning Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
- DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
- Classroom learning for theory.
- One-on-one mentoring.
Full or part-time students
For people who do not have traineeships or apprenticeships. Learning options available for people looking for a change in career, and those who would like to gain skills by completing some units will include:
- Learning will be in a rural workplace with access to TAFE Tasmania facilities where appropriate.
- Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
- Learning Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
- DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
- Classroom learning for theory.
- One-on-one mentoring.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. You will have the option to be assessed by:
- Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
- Short written assessment – question and answer style test.
- Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based.
- Assignments – research topic and provide a written response.
- Practical – you will be observed doing tasks.
- All students may be assessed in the workplace.
- If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests)
- Testimonials from supervisor.
- Photographic and other media evidence.
When I complete this training, what's next?
Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:
- Students who complete selected units only, may enrol in the entire Certificate III Agriculture.
- Full or part-time training that leads to a Certificate IV in Agriculture.
- Qualified Agricultural tradesperson.
What Competencies will I undertake?
To achieve a Certificate III in Agriculture, 16 units must be completed comprising: 1 core unit plus 15 elective units.
Core Unit
- Carry out Occupational Health and Safety Procedures
PLUS
Elective units – complete 15 of the elective units of competency.
A common selection may include the following units taken from over 100 available units of competence:
- Prepare and apply chemicals
- Establish agricultural crops
- Establish pastures and crops for livestock production
- Provide feed for livestock
- Implement livestock husbandry practices
- Plan and construct an electric fence
- Coordinate horticultural crop harvesting
- Operate pressurised irrigation systems
- Control weeds
- Control pests, diseases and disorders
- Implement a plant nutrition program
- Operate machinery in adverse conditions
- Create and use simple spreadsheets
- Provide basic first aid
- Comply with industry Quality Assurance programs
Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap
of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay
HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text
books.
Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process
A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Agriculture team and/or representatives from the Agricultural Sector, meet regularly to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.
Consultation
A range of representatives from the Tasmanian Agricultural sector, who have employees studying with TAFE Tasmania, were consulted when the learning and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
