Certificate III (RTF30103)


 

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • People currently working in the Horticultural Industry and wanting to gain a qualification
  • People who have completed some units of the Certificate II or Certificate III in Horticulture and now wanting the entire qualification
  • People who would like to work in the Horticultural industry.
  • People looking for a change in career.
  • People who would like to gain skills by completing some units and not the entire qualification.
  • People who need to gain skills to satisfy various industry licensing requirements.

Do I need any skills?

The Amenity Horticultural Training Package (RTF 03) units you will be studying will be made clear before you start your course. We will discuss these in our Information Session, and you will also find them in the:

  • Induction booklet that is provided to all students
  • Training Plan for Apprentices.

Students entering Certificate III in Horticulture are required to have completed Certificate II in Horticulture or be able to demonstrate competence at that level.

Work undertaken as Horticultural tradespersons can include:

  • Monitoring plant health
  • Operating and maintaining specialised and advanced machinery
  • Providing information on plants, products and treatments
  • Erecting horticultural structures
  • Controlling weeds, pests and diseases
  • Establishing and maintaining planted areas

TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.

If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests).

How long will it take?

Depending on your learning and assessment needs, it is expected you could complete the full Certificate III in Horticulture within twelve (12) months full time or eighteen (18) months as an apprentice or trainee.

How will I learn?

Apprentices

This course is for people who are currently employed in a horticultural workplace, and have a Training Contract. Depending on you and your employers needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both Learning options and will include:

  • Off-the-job – Learning will be in the Institute of TAFE Tasmania, or in an appropriate venue.
  • On-the-job – training in your workplace.
  • Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
  • Learning Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
  • DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
  • Classroom learning for theory.
  • One-on-one mentoring.

Full or part-time students

For people who do not have apprenticeships. Learning options available for people looking for a change in career, and those who would like to gain skills by completing some units will include:

  • Learning will be in a rural workplace or at TAFE Tasmania facilities where appropriate.
  • Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
  • Learning Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
  • DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
  • Classroom learning for theory.
  • One-on-one mentoring.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. You will have the option to be assessed by:

  • Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
  • Short written assessment – question and answer style test.
  • Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based.
  • Assignments – research topic and provide a written response.
  • Practical – you will be observed doing tasks.
  • All students may be assessed in the workplace.
  • If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests)
  • Testimonials from supervisor.
  • Photographic and other media evidence

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:

  • Students who complete selected units only, may enrol in the entire Certificate III in Horticulture.
  • Full or part-time training that leads to a Certificate IV in Horticulture.
  • Qualified Horticultural tradesperson.

What Competencies will I undertake?

To achieve a Certificate III in Horticulture, 16 units must be completed comprising: 1 core unit, plus 15 elective units.

Core Unit

  • Carry out Occupational Health and Safety Procedures

PLUS

Elective units – complete 15 of the elective units of competency.
A common selection may include the following units taken from over 70 available units of competence:

  • Prepare and apply chemicals
  • Implement a plant establishment program
  • Construct turf playing areas
  • Provide information on plants and their culture
  • Implement a propagation plan
  • Implement revegetation works
  • Coordinate horticultural crop harvesting
  • Operate pressurised irrigation systems
  • Control weeds
  • Control pests, diseases and disorders
  • Implement a plant nutrition program
  • Operate specialised machinery and equipment
  • Erect simple structures and features
  • Provide basic first aid
  • Balance register/ terminal

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process

A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Horticulture team and/or representatives from the Horticultural Sector, meet regularly to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.

Consultation

A range of representatives from the Tasmanian Horticultural sector, who have employees studying with TAFE Tasmania, were consulted when the learning and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
