Certificates II, III and IV


 

Who should enrol in this qualification?

TAFE offers full and part-time training for people involved or wishing to become involved in the wool industry.  Graduates have become employed in all sectors of the industry. 

Do I need any skills?

There are no mandatory requirements for entry into these Qualifications. However, the worker's skill level, previous experience and other relevant Qualifications should determine an appropriate qualification level.

Average strength, good health and physically fit. A student may be required to demonstrate physical fitness to undertake this training.

How long will it take?

There is no time limit for these courses; students are assessed as competent when they are ready for assessment.

How will I learn?

Trainees / Apprentices

This course is for people who are currently employed in a rural workplace, and have a Training Contract. Depending on you and your employers needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both Learning options will include:

  • Off-the-job – Learning will be in the Institute of TAFE Tasmania, or in an appropriate venue.
  • On-the-job – training in your workplace.
  • Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
  • Learning Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
  • DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
  • Classroom learning for theory.
  • One-on-one mentoring.

Full or part-time students

For people who do not have traineeships or apprenticeships. Learning options available for people looking for a change in career, and those who would like to gain skills by completing some units will include:

  • Learning will be in a rural workplace with access to TAFE Tasmania facilities where appropriate.
  • Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
  • Learning Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
  • DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
  • Classroom learning for theory.
  • One-on-one mentoring.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. You will have the option to be assessed by:

  • Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
  • Short written assessment – question and answer style test.
  • Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based.
  • Assignments – research topic and provide a written response.
  • Practical – you will be observed doing tasks.
  • All students may be assessed in the workplace.
  • If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg verbal tests instead of short written tests)
  • Testimonials from supervisor.
  • Photographic and other media evidence.

When I complete this training, what's next?

Certificate II: This qualification is for beginner shearers, who are trained to remove wool from sheep and perform the essential tasks that improve the efficiency of their shearing to improver level. Work includes shearing sheep, maintaining shearing equipment and working as part of a team.

Certificate III: Shearers who receive training to remove wool from sheep and perform the essential tasks that improve the efficiency of their shearing to professional level. Skills covered include shearing sheep, maintaining shearing equipment and working as part of a team.

Certificate IV: This is specialist training that allows more experienced shearers to set shearing standards and also operate as Shearing contractors who are employed by farmers to shear animals (usually sheep) and organise the shearing gang.

What Competencies will I undertake?

Certificate II - Core Units

 Follow Occupational, Health & Safety Procedures  Observe Environmental Work Practices
 Work Effectively in the Industry  Participate in Workplace Communications
 Crutch Sheet  Shear Sheep to Improver Level *
 Grind Combs and Cutters for Machine Shearing  Prepare Hand piece and Downtube for Machine Shearing

* Shear Sheep to Novice Level is a pre-requisite to Shear Improver Level.

Certificate III - Core Units

Certificate II is mandatory for this qualification.

 Coordinate Work Site Activities  Shear Sheep to Professional Level
 Maintain Consistent Shearing Performance  Maintain and Service Shearing Hand pieces
 Prepare Combs and Cutters for Machine Setting    

Certificate IV

Certificate III is mandatory for this qualification.
The 4 core units listed plus any 3 units from the Specialist List.

Core Units:   .
 Provide On-job Training Support  Implement and Monitor the Enterprise OH&S Program
 Apply Advanced Shearing Techniques  Conduct Equipment Experting for Machine Shearing
       
  Specialist Units:    
 Manage a Small Team  Supervise Work Routines and Staff Performance
 Operate Within a Budget Framework  Arrange Employment for Shearing Operations
 Prepare Shearing Team Wages  Account for Shearing Shed Supplies

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process

A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Agriculture team and/or representatives from the Agricultural Sector, meet regularly to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.

Consultation

A range of representatives from the Tasmanian Agricultural sector, who have employees studying with TAFE Tasmania, were consulted when the learning and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
