Racing Industry

Racing (Thoroughbred Owner Trainer)

Certificate IV (RGR40102)


 

Who should enrol in this qualification?

  • People currently working in a racing stable and wanting to gain a qualification
  • People who would like to work in the racing industry
  • People looking for a change in career
  • People who would like to gain skills by completing some units but not the entire qualification
  • People who need, as a requirement of licensing, training in selected units

Do I need any skills?

This person is licensed to operate a business that trains horses that are owned by the trainer or the trainer’s family for the purpose of competing in industry-regulated events. The trainer is responsible for the care, maintenance & racing performance of the animals. A trainer needs to develop a sound knowledge of all aspects of the industry and is able to perform all tasks & duties associated with running a racing establishment including management of staff, finances & equipment.

How long will it take?

Depending on your learning & assessment needs, you could complete the full Certificate lV in Racing in three (3) years.

Where can I learn?

At your workplace &, when required, at a TAFE Tasmania campus in your region.

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. Options will include:

  • On the job – training in your workplace
  • Off the job training at a TAFE Tasmania campus or nominated venue

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:

  • Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the required skills & knowledge and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information
  • Short written assessment – question & answer test
  • Projects – individual or group, may be practical or research based
  • Assignments – research a topic and provide a written response
  • Practical – you will be observed doing tasks
  • If required, other assessment methods may be used for students ( eg verbal tests instead of short written tests
  • Testimonials from supervisors

When I complete this training, what's next?

Depending on how you completed this qualification, further study or career options may include:

  • Upon successful completion, students may enrol in the Diploma of Racing (Thoroughbred Trainer)

What Competencies will I undertake?

To achieve a Certificate lV, 19 units must be completed. This comprises:

  • 8 core units and
  • 1 elective and
  • Pre-requisites

Core units – complete all 8 units of competency

  • Plan training & racing programs for standardbreds or thoroughbreds
  • Manage the education of standardbreds or thoroughbreds
  • Train & race standardbreds or thoroughbreds
  • Evaluate training & racing programs for standardbreds or thoroughbreds
  • Manage racing programs or horses
  • Manage maintenance & security of a training establishment
  • Manage finances for a horse training establishment
  • Manage staff &/or self for horse trainers

PLUS

Elective units – complete 1 of the following units of competency

  • Manage & promote a training & racing business
  • Manage security of staff & property for racing stables
  • Manage business planning processes for training establishments
  • Manage & organise for effectiveness & efficiency in the training establishment

PLUS

Pre-requisite units (all of Certificate ll plus 5 Certificate lll units from this list)

  • Apply Occupational Health & Safety procedures in horse codes
  • Handle horses safely
  • Work effectively in the thoroughbred or standardbred code of the racing industry
  • Care for horses
  • Oversee safe handling of horses
  • Apply principles of basic anatomy & physiology to horses
  • Lead & co-ordinate personnel effectively in the racing industry

Fees

You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.

Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process

Natural Resources assessors meet four (4) times each year to review, compare & evaluate assessment processes, tools & evidence. Actions taken are documented to show improvements in quality & consistency of assessments.

Racing Training Tasmania is the peak body representing thoroughbred, standardbred and greyhound codes in Tasmania. This organisation was consulted when the learning & assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
