Diploma (RTE50103)
Description
This course is aimed at those people who wish to work as a farm manager, share farmer or may be contemplating farm ownership. You will have direct responsibility for running a complete farming enterprise but you may report to others.
This is a competency based course conducted on your worksite. A TAFE trainer/assessor will visit your worksite approximately every 4 to 8 weeks to assess your progress.
For some units of competency, depending on demand there may be 1 -2 day workshops available.
This course is recognised in all states and territories in Australia and New Zealand. If you fail to complete it in Tasmania you are able to pick up from where you finished in any other Australia state or territory.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- People currently working in the Rural Industry and wanting to gain a qualification
- People who have completed some units of the Certificate III, IV, V or VI in Agriculture and now wanting the entire qualification
- People who would like to work in the Rural industry.
- People looking for a change in career.
- People who would like to gain skills by completing some units and not the entire qualification.
- People who need to gain skills to satisfy various industry licensing requirements.
Do I need any skills?
The Rural Industry Training Package (RTE50103) units you will be studying will be made clear before you start your course. We will discuss these in our Information Session, and you will also find them in the:
- Induction booklet that is provided to all students
Students entering Diploma of Agriculture are required to have completed Certificate IV in Agriculture or be able to demonstrate competence at that level.
Agricultural students are expected to:
- keep production and other essential records
- To show high level of management knowledge
- Be able to research and report on information
- Have computer knowledge
TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.
How long will it take?
Depending on your learning and assessment needs, it is expected you could complete the full Diploma of Agriculture within Three (3) years.

Workplace Based
How will I learn?
This course is for people who are currently employed in a rural workplace, Depending on you and your employers needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both Learning options will include:
- Off-the-job – Learning will be in the Institute of TAFE Tasmania, or in an appropriate venue.
- On-the-job – training in your workplace.
- Demonstrations – to show you how to do things.
- Learning Guides – Books that contain information to help with your learning.
- DVDs and Videos – Resources that give you extra support and information.
- Classroom learning for theory.
- One-on-one mentoring.
- Assignments
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. You will have the option to be assessed by:
- Recognition – you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
- Written assessment – question and answer style test.
- Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based.
- Assignments – research topic and provide a written response.
- Practical – you will be observed doing tasks.
- All students may be assessed in the workplace.
- Testimonials.
- Photographic and other media evidence.
When I complete this training, what's next?
Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:
- Students who complete may enrol in the Advanced Diploma Agriculture.
What Competencies will I undertake?
To achieve a Diploma of Agriculture, 10 units must be completed comprising:
Elective units – complete 10 of the elective units of competency.
A common selection may include the following units taken from over 100 available units of competence:
- Manage staff
- Manage livestock production
- Develop a whole farm plan
- Develop and review a business plan
- Plan and manage long-term weed, pest and/or disease control in crops
- Prepare and monitor budgets and financial reports
- Establish and maintain the enterprise OH&S program
- Manage plant health
- Manage projects
- Conduct online financial transactions
- Monitor and manage soils
Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap
of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay
HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text
books.
Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process
A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Agriculture team and/or representatives from the Agricultural Sector, meet regularly to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. We document any action taken to improve the quality and consistency of assessment.
Consultation
A range of representatives from the Tasmanian Agricultural sector, who have employees studying with TAFE Tasmania, were consulted when the learning and assessment strategies for this qualification were developed.
