Who should enrol in this qualification?
- Potential micro business operators wishing to explore the possibility of setting up their own business. Definition of a micro business operation is a business that provides products or services and employs less than five staff.
- Current micro business operators. These could include: independent contractors, micro business operators and/or home based business operators
Do I need any skills?
There are no prerequisite requirements for individual units of competency.
How long will it take?
5 months fulltime or 10 months part-time

At a TAFE campus or online from your home or workplace anywhere in Tasmania.

How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:
- Holistic investigative report will be developed as participants complete units
- Assignments relating to units of competency or parts of holistic investigative report
- Workplace assessment/evidence
- Recognition – you are entitled to have your current skills assessed in order to determine the amount of training that is needed.
When I complete this training, what’s next?
Depending on how you completed this training, further study or career options may include:
- Participants may undertake the BSB40407 Certificate IV in Small Business Management qualification
What Competencies will I undertake?
A total of 10 units need to be completed for this qualification. This includes 5 core units and 5 elective units.
The 5 elective units may be selected from the elective units listed below and/or a Certificate III qualification from any endorsed Training Package, of which 1 unit may be selected from a certificate II or Certificate IV qualification. These can be discussed at your information session.

Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap
of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay
HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text
books.
Concessions apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc).

Assessment Validation Process
It is the intent of the Small business state-wide team to validate a number of their assessments annually – usually November/December over a 2 day period. (The team will also validate any assessment on an as needed basis throughout the year if that need should arise.) The method of validation will be by way of involvement of assessors from the Small Business team.
Consultation
Small business has an online Enterprise Reference Group in operation. This group is made up of small business owners/operators who commenced at the micro business level.
