Business (Small Business Management)
Certificate IV (BSB40401 )
Description
The Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management) qualification that we offer is very flexible, with students able to undertake the training in face to face classes (day and night), short duration workshops and flexibly (home, work, remote).
The program is ideally suited to those students who either have a small business or have an established idea of what business they are endeavoring to start. The reason for this is the study program is focused on building an actual business plan for their business; however it is possible to complete the work on case studies.
Students have a variety of units to choose from to obtain their qualification, and the decision making process of selecting the units is usually done in conjunction with a member of the Small Business team so that the student is directed towards units that will benefit their study.
Students also have the opportunity to be recognised for their existing skills and may elect to provide sufficient evidence to allow assessment instead of undertaking study in units that they may already have skills, knowledge and qualifications.
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- Small Business Owners
- Managers of small business
- those aspiring to own their own business
Do I need any skills?
It is preferable for students to have an existing business or established business idea, as this allows the course to do what it is intended to do and that is produce a working business plan for their business.
For students to study outside of TAFE, they will need access to a computer with internet access.
How long will it take?
It is generally accepted that the qualification will take from 6 - 12 months to complete part time or 6 months full time.
The majority of our teachers are industry based and/or experienced, and in a number of cases own their own small business. This give the qualification more creditability and also allows for students and teachers to interact on a more personal basis as they can relate to each other more readily.
Where can I learn?
At a TAFE campus or online from your home or workplace anywhere in Tasmania.
Hobart City Campus - Level 3, 75 Campbell Street
Launceston City Campus - Cnr Wellington & Paterson Streets
Devonport Campus - Valley Road
Burnie Campus - Mooreville Road
How will I learn?
Delivery is conducted in a number of different ways, with the emphasis being on delivery that best suits the student. We allow the student to dictate what delivery method they wish to undertake and structure the delivery around them.
To facilitate this ethos we currently have in place day and night classes, short duration workshops and flexible study (home, work, remote). We are continually looking at other orrortunities to further expand our methods of delivery.
The entire small business units are delivered using the resource books (Small Business Management series) that are written and produced at the Adelaide Institute of TAFE. The common units are delivered using a number of different text resources and the e-Business units are delivered online. Different teachers will also introduce other resources as part of their delivery to enhance the students experience and knowledge.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment will include:
- workplace projects derived from pre-formulated assessments
- the production and presentation of an appropriate business plan
- workplace observation
- demonstration
- portfolio
- role plays
- case studies
- testimonials
- workbook exercises and projects
The team also uses a comprehensive recognition kit designed by the Small Business team that is generally used to assess on-the-job. Underpinning knowledge and experience is assessed by provision of testimonials, projects, assessments, qualifications, summative assessment and work samples and/or by questioning.
