Fitness

Certificate III (SRF30206)


Description

Workplace functions could be working with clients as a fitness instructor within a fitness centre, conducting group activities such as aerobic classes, gym instructing or aqua classes. Organisational and administrative work may also be included in the job role.

A range of competencies are included such as basic anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology and developing fitness programs.

Do I need any skills?

An ability to undertake science / biology units. To succeed students must have at least basic levels of Literacy and Numeracy.

Institute of TAFE Tasmania offers support to students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process. If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (e.g. verbal tests instead of short written tests).


How long will it take?

6 months - 1-2 workshops per week (evenings and occasional weekend)

How will I learn?

Depending on your needs, learning may be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout all assessments, Occupational Health & Safety procedures must be followed.

When I complete this training, what’s next?

This qualification provides the skills to work as a fitness instructor. Students completing the Certificate III may continue on to study the Certificate IV in Fitness.

What Competencies will I undertake?

24 units of competency must be selected to complete this qualification including all 9 Core units, 10 Stream units, 1 Specialisation unit of your choice and 4 Elective units .

Core Units

  • Organise Personal Work Priorities and Development
  • Follow Defined OH&S Policies and Procedures
  • Contribute to Effective Workplace Relationships
  • Provide Advanced First Aid Response
  • Meet Client Needs and Expectations
  • Undertake Risk Analysis of Activities
  • Operate Computing Packages
  • Process Client Complaints
  • Apply Sport and Recreation Law

Stream Units

  • Provide Orientation to Clients Prior to Undertaking a Fitness Program
  • Provide Nutrition Advice to Clients in Accordance with Recommended Guidelines
  • Develop and Apply an Awareness of Specific Populations to Exercise Delivery
  • Provide Advice to Clients on the Application of Basic Anatomy and Physiology to Fitness Programs
  • Instruct Fitness Activity Skills to a Client Using Fitness Equipment
  • Apply Basic Exercise Science to Exercise Instruction
  • Undertake Client Induction and Screening
  • Use and Maintain Core Fitness Equipment
  • Develop Basic Fitness Programs
  • Provide Leadership to Groups

Specialisation Units

  • AQUA - Instruct Water Based Fitness Classes For Low Risk Clients
  • GROUP - Plan and Instruct a Group Exercise Class
  • GYM - Customise Gym Instructional Skills to Include Specific Areas of Expertise Current in the Fitness Industry

Electives
A comprehensive list of electives units will be given at the information session or can be obtained from the delivery team.

Fees

Commercial fees apply to this course and are not subject to the fees cap. Concessions do not apply. Fees are available on application.

However, due to increased flexibility of delivery the total cost of these qualifications has decreased. Please call the team for details.
