Certificate III (LMF30902)
Who should enrol in this qualification?
- People who are working in the Soft Furnishings Industry and want to gain a qualification.
- People who have completed Certificate II in Soft Furnishings.
- People who have previously completed some Soft Furnishings units in the Furnishings Training Package and now want the entire qualification.
- People looking for a change in career.
Do I need any skills?
Whilst there are no prerequisites for this Qualification, it is desirable for Students to have:
- the ability to meet the learning demands of the qualification.
- interpersonal communication and personal presentation skills required to work effectively in the Clothing Industry.
- a basic knowledge of, and interest in, the industry sector.
- an understanding of the typical daily work roles for a career in the industry sector.
- ability to comply with the security/safety standards required by workroom regulations.
- sufficient verbal & written language skills to understand, communicate and carryout basic instructions within the training environment.
- basic computer skills.
TAFE Tasmania has support available to help students who may have difficulty meeting the above requirements. Some of these skills may be improved through the learning process.

How will I learn?
Units from the Training Package are delivered holistically in the classroom environment simulating workplace practices.
Students
This qualification is for people looking for a change in career or for those who would like to gain skills by completing some units and who do not have an apprenticeship. Students may enrol in part-time study to attend class. Learning options can include:
- Simulated workroom – Learning will be in the Institute of TAFE Tasmania.
- Demonstrations – to show you how to do tasks.
- Learner Guides – Books that contain information to help with learning.
- DVDs and Videos – Resources that give extra support and information.
- Computer Assisted Learning – A self-paced system that gives extra support and information.
- Classroom learning for theory.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments are conducted at the Institute of TAFE Tasmania and/or in the workplace. Assessment may be a combination of:
- Recognition of current skills – you may be able to show that you already have the ability, and don’t need to be assessed again. Ask us for more information.
- Short written/verbal assessment – question and answer style test.
- Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research based.
- Assignments – research topic and provide a written/verbal response.
- Practical –observation of tasks.
- Product – the quality and/or content of the products produced.
Throughout all assessments, Workplace/Occupational Health & Safety and Quality procedures must be followed.
If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg documented verbal tests instead of short written tests).
What other study or career options are available?
Career opportunities may include employment in a supervised workroom for Soft Furnishings and/or allied industries.
What Competencies will I undertake?
To achieve a Certificate III in Soft Furnishings, 19 units must be completed.

2008 Fees
You'll be surprised at how affordable TAFE Tasmania is - most courses have a cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession). You do not pay HECS. Additional costs may apply to some courses for uniforms, licenses or text books.
Concessions … apply to students in receipt of, or dependant of a person in receipt of Centrelink benefits (e.g. Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, New Start, Pension, Parenting Payment etc.).

Assessment Validation Process
A range of assessors from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania’s state-wide Clothing and Textiles team and/or representatives from Tasmanian enterprises, meet once a year to review, compare and evaluate our assessment process, tools and evidence. Recommendation from these meetings, that improve the quality and consistency of assessments, are documented and actioned.

A range of Soft Furnishings Enterprises were consulted when the Learning and Assessment Strategies for this qualification were developed.
