Irrigation Tasmania
Irrigation Tasmania knows water. TAFE Tasmania knows training. While water may be the world’s most precious commodity, TAFE is training Irrigation Tasmania’s most important asset to get that commodity to you, when and where you need it.
Irrigation Tasmania commenced operations in 1995, with only two employees. Exceptional growth over a 13 year period has seen the business increase to over 40 people, with locations in Somerset, Smithton and Devonport. They were named Telstra Tasmanian Business of the Year in 2007. Irrigation Tasmania utilises the most advanced technology to harness the world’s most precious commodity – water.
CFO and Human Resource Manager George Austin says the company’s relevance cuts across many industries, from Agriculture and Domestic to the industrial and mining sector.
“Irrigation Tasmania is dedicated to getting water from one point to another, wherever and whenever is required.
“Our competitive advantage comes from our skilled personnel backed with years of experience.”
“Our business is involved with the supply and installation of pumps, pipes and motors to convey water, effluent and other industrial fluids. We service the whole State and even mainland areas,” Mr Austin said.
Irrigation Tasmania attributes its success to the efforts of its staff, who are dedicated, committed and hardworking. Training is at the heart of these qualities.
“At times our industry can be dangerous, particularly working in the field with machinery, at heights and in confined spaces.
“Our field staff are usually tradesmen drawn from industry. Training begins immediately and involves adopting new skills and expertise.
“All new field staff do Certificate III in Irrigation, which is specifically designed for the irrigation industry and is recognised throughout Australia,” Mr Austin said
All Irrigation Tasmania employees complete their qualification on the job. As they work all over the State, TAFE Tasmania needs to be extremely flexible in providing training when, and how they need it.
“The training provided by TAFE Tasmania is essential for the future growth of our business.
“We have a long association with TAFE which has provided excellent training programmes for our staff,” Mr Austin said.
TAFE recognises previous learning of Irrigation Tasmania staff in completing their qualifications. TAFE recognises the skills and experience previously gained, and doesn’t expect individuals to learn again what they already know.
“TAFE staff have been equally dedicated and committed to servicing Irrigation Tasmania and have been willing to do so in ways that meet our needs and in a flexible manner.
Mr Austin said staff performance, particularly information retention was greatly enhanced and they thank TAFE for the willingness to respond to their needs.
“The results exceeded our expectations.”
