Your rights and responsibilities as a student
Overview
As a TAFE student you are entitled to:
As a TAFE student it is your responsibility to:
- treat other people with fairness and respect
- be punctual and regular in attendance
- observe normal safety practices, including no smoking
in
buildings
- participate in scheduled assessment events and submit
written assessment items on time
- not engage in plagiarism or cheating in any assessment
or
test and provide authentic original assessment evidence
- behave in a responsible manner ie no littering, harassing
or
offending fellow students or staff, or damaging property.
Student Conduct
Unacceptable behaviour is defined as behaviour that:

constitutes disobedience of instructions which regulate
the conduct of students, or |
| ii) |

is likely to be of detriment to the health, safety
and welfare of the staff or other students, or |
| iii) |
|
is discriminatory or constitutes harassment of
staff or other students, or |
| iv) |
|
is likely to cause harm and distress to staff or
other students, or |
| v) |
|
is likely to undermine the learning and work environment
of staff and other students, or |
| vi) |
|
threatens the academic and career prospects of staff
and other students, or |
| vii) |
|
causes, or is likely to cause, damage to property of
the Institute of TAFE Tasmania. |
| |
|

Certain student conduct is prohibited in the TAFE Tasmania
By-Laws
1998. The By-Laws cover conduct relating to:
- vehicles on TAFE property
- public meetings
- the possession of alcohol
- the conduct of business for private gain
- the possession of animals on TAFE Tasmania property
- honesty in assessment activities
- damage of equipment
- obstructive behaviour
- disorderly behaviour
- unsafe behaviour
The By-Laws provide for disciplinary hearings and sanctions
along with an appeals procedure.
A complete copy of the By-Law is available on the TAFE
Tasmania intranet site. Gross misconduct may result in
suspension or expulsion from TAFE Tasmania.
Attendance
If you are in receipt of Centrelink benefits,
there are attendance requirements.
International students
are
required as a condition of their student visa to attend all
classes.
There are no compulsory attendance requirements
for most Australian students. However, participation and
attendance at classes maximises your success.
Student ICT Acceptable Use
Overview
This policy provides guidance on the acceptable use of Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) resources. ICT resources
are provided by TAFE Tasmania for educational, communication
and research purposes. This Acceptable Use document will
help protect students and the resources by clearly stating
what is acceptable and what is not.
TAFE Tasmania recognises that ICT resources including the
Internet is a valuable source of learning and information
resources relevant to its teaching programs. Students are
encouraged to make use of these resources for purposes relating
to their courses of study being undertaken through TAFE Tasmania.
ICT resources should not be used for other purposes.
ICT resources include the use of computers, the TAFE Tasmania
network, the Internet and e mail, digital still or video
cameras, printers and scanners.

Copyright
The law requires copyright royalty payments for the
reproduction of a considerable amount of published material,
notably books.
For study and research purposes students are allowed to copy
10% or one chapter of a book or one article per issue of a
journal. More extensive reproduction may be possible. Check
with library staff.
Occupational Health and Safety Policy
The Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 applies to all
staff
and students of TAFE Tasmania. All employees, including
students, have the primary responsibility to ensure that they
work safely, without risk of injury to themselves, fellow
workers/students and the workplace.
NB: The wearing of personal protective gear is mandatory in
many learning environments. The aims of, and responsibilities
under TAFE Tasmania's OH&S Policy, are on this web site.
An incident report form is included.
Smoking
Smoking is prohibited in all TAFE Tasmania buildings including
canteens and student entrances. Smoking is also prohibited
by
legislation within 3 metres of a building entrance and within
10
metres of a building air intake. Penalty up to $2000.
Student Property
TAFE Tasmania undertakes no responsibility for any tools,
instruments or any other property belonging to students.
Students must at all times accept responsibility for safeguarding
their own property on TAFE Tasmania premises.
Student lockers may be available.
Drugs
Illegal substances of any description are not permitted
within
TAFE Tasmania buildings or grounds.
